Default Mobile Web Usage costs

I have a plain vanilla AC voice family plan-- no data or text bundles. My
phone is mobile web capable. If I use the web, do I incur any additional
costs other than airtime?

Doug

only if you setup the phone to use a free proxy server, and it will just use
your minutes. Otherwise it will cost $4.99 a month to activate Mobile Web,
and use still your minutes. Look on Howard Forums
http://www.howardforums.com/ in the Verizon area. You'll see lots of info
on free mobile web.

Or free (minus voices minutes) if you configure www.google.com as your WAP
proxy and home page.

I just did this. If you would like a simple set of instructions, let me know
and I'll post them.

Douglas, how you configure your phone to use other than Vzw's proxy, and
avoid paying the $5/mo fee, depends on your phone model. On my LG VX6100, I
enter a hidden menu selection, enter a "secret code" and then enter the IP
address and the URL for my new (non-Vzw) homepage. It sounds far more
complicated that it is, but the exact steps vary by phone model.

This is a widely discussed topic on the www.howardforums.com web site. That
site has sections dedicated to cell providers, phone makers. I'm pretty
sure someone with your exact phone model has received the precise
instructions that would work for you and they are listed in the HF section
dedicated to your phone maker. I don't mean this to sound like a harsh
"search the darn archive" message, I don't mean it that way at all. I just
helped someone in this NG do exactly what you are asking because their phone
was nearly the same model as my phone.

I happen to use a service available at www.hopke.net They charge $1 per
month and sent an IP address of their server. Prior to using this service I
bought a month on www.mobileweb4u.com They charged $3 per month, but the
best part was the very detailed directions specific to my phone model. Once
you know the precise procedure for your phone all you need is the IP address
of any server, even a free server, to access mobile web on your phone.
Whatever proxy server you use, a free server like Google or any other it
will use minutes just like a voice call. If your account has free nights
and weekends, then mobile web would also be free during the same parts of
the day/week.

To get more help tell us your phone model or search howardforums for "free
wap" in the forum specific to your phone manufacturer.

That would be great, I'd like to see them.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I use an LG VX4400 and have a Moto T720 and T730 I
keep for spares.

I'll bet the VX4400 is very similar to my VX6100.

Try this:
press "menu"
select 0
enter the "Service Code" of 000000 (six zeroes)
scroll down to "WAP Settings" or something similar

If all of this seems to work, you can back out of the menues by pressing
Clear until you return to your normal screen. All you need now is a WAP
proxy IP address, proxy port setting, and to enter a non-Vzw homepage to
access WAP on your phone.
