I'm finally ready to walk away from my old reliable LG clamshell phone.
I want to be able to read email via web browser and send text messages
(and voice of course...)
So, which one is better on Verizon: Q or 8830? I like both, but the
recent Blackberry outages make me wonder why I need the BB if all I
need is web browser-based email.
Your thoughts are all welcomed.

Opera mini runs on the 8830 and does not depend on the
Blackberry system. It may be usable for accessing email
via a website.

I haven't used either one. But I just got a Blackberry Pearl, and several
colleagues at work have (or had) the Q.
Nobody seemed to like the Q very much. The biggest knock on it was that a
charge, even with the oversized battery, often wouldn't last through a
workday. Two of our Q users switched to the Pearl (and love it); another
switched to a (rather big and clunky) Samsung because he liked the larger
keyboard. He too is happy with his choice, especially compared to the Q, which
he hated.
The Blackberry outage affected email, but not phone service or SMS messages.
And it appears that none of my emails, at least, were actually lost. An
annoyance, but not a show-stopper.

I'm using an 8830 on Verizon and love it. The EV-DO internet is great,
and I love having true push email from Gmail, Yahoo, and my University.
Overall, it is still the most secure and reliable system out there.
That's why whenever there's downtime, the main-stream news hops on the
story. With that being said, during the "outage" last week, I was
having no issues with any functions of my device.
As has been previously pointed out, in the rare occurence that
something like this happens again, all phone and SMS functions of the
device continue to work, and normally, no email is actually lost,
though email and data functions may not work until the system is back
up, but the same is true for any data system.
1 vote here for the moto Q. its a great phone and has stood up to
hard use for almost 2 years now. the screen resolution is great,
windows mobile 5.0 smartphone edition has lots of free software
available. you wont find that with a blackberry. i have the extended
battery and it lasts as long as other smartphones. my prior phone
was an audiovox smt 5600 and I had to replace it numerous times. EV-DO
is worth the price.

I recently had to make the same decision and I wound up going for the Q
with the extended battery pack. The main reason is the Q has a camera
and the 8830 doesn't. Being able to send a picture by email is very
useful for my needs. Otherwise I would have gotten the 8830 - it's very
popular around here.
Warning about checking webmail using the phone's browser - it's harder
than it seems. My Earthlink webmail uses Java to login so I get stuck
right there. If you decide to go with the Q try your webmail on a store
phone first or ask the sales guy.
Thanks to all. I will try the web mail accounts I have in case there is
some hangups - good call on that point.
I've really kind of grown fond of the 8830, but if I can do it on the
Q, I probably will go that way.
Thanks again for your input!
