Just got off the phone with VZW. Going overseas again and needing a new
global phone. Hate to upgrade my HTC and lose unlimited data.
The wonderful rep advised me that I could upgrade DH's dumb phone and
keep the unlimited data on my phone, just activate the new phone on my
number by calling them instead of activating it myself.
The new smartphone will cost $199.99 this way where it would have cost
me $169.99 on my contract, but I would have lost unlimited data.
Now I will have the same exact phone bill, one dumb phone and one smart
phone and unlimited data with the smart phone on month-to-month.
The rep is throwing in a case and an extra SIM card (just in case). My
new phone will be purple with a purple case. It is a 4G MOTO RAZR (not a
Maxx)global capable.
The thing with the Moto is that if I want to use the global feature I
have to activate the global data for $25 per month, but that's
pro-ratable and removable when at home. There are ways to turn off data
roaming, emails and updates hitting the phone, etc. so that if I need
GPS when lost in an alley in Venice, I won't be over using data.
Global data package is $25 for 100MB, Overages are in increments of
100MB @ $25.

If you can manage to stay under one or two hundred MB data, that's golden.
Still, I find the price shocking -- for a GB of data, it comes up to $250,
and if I contrast that with what the only foreign PaYGo data SIM I know has
cost me in the past, viz., about eight bucks for whichever happens first, 2
GB data or 30 days, I'm utterly horrified (comparing with Orange PL).
That said, enjoy Venice, e buon viaggio! Cheers, -- tlvp

That's a good deal for a multi-country pay-as-you-go data SIM. Do you
have a link?

Ok, I'm confused.
If what I read is correct, they are allowing you to share your existing
unlimited plan on two smart phones (because you paid full price for the
new one)? And, they aren't even charging the extra $10 per month smart
phone vs. basic phone? This sounds too good to be true.

I think what she's saying is that she's buying a smart phone for her
husband but they are letting her activate it on her number so he keeps
the dumb phone and she keeps the unlimited plan.

Sorry, single country. PL only.

Yup. Alas, in Polish only (but Google Translate can help some):
And the tariff's changed a bit since last I bought one of those. BTW, the
Polish zloty runs at about 3.5 to the dollar these days, so 25 zl. is under
8 bucks, and 50 zl. is under fifteen.
I imagine other countries have comparable single-country offers.

Not everyone is price-sensitive.
That is very expensive for global data but it's also very expensive for
global voice roaming. But it's simple to do and doesn't require buying
SIM cards, forwarding cell phones, etc. For light usage it's no big deal.
Last night I just lent one of my quad-band GSM phones to my daughter's
friend who is going to China on Tuesday, on her own. Hopefully the SIM
card is still active after a month, I'm not sure how long it's good for.
They could roam on Verizon in China (even without a global phone, since
China also has an extensive CDMA network) if they wanted to, but the
roaming charges are outrageously expensive.
We made a lot of calls in China when we went in June. We had four phones
with four local SIM cards. But we were not on an organized tour where we
had everything planned for us. We needed to call hotels a lot as well as
calling each other. If you're on an organized tour where everything is
planned for you then you don't need to do much calling. Where there's
Wi-Fi you can use a VOIP app to call for just a couple of cents per
minute (or you can do Skype to Skype for free in some cases).

Yes, I'm afraid you are a bit confused. One smartphone, one dumbphone.
The upgrade on the dumbphone to smartphone will not change the
contract on the smartphone. When the phone arrives, we will activate it
on the smartphone's number.

Is there a different SIM for data than for voice?

Why doesn't the upgrade from dumbphone to smartphone require a data plan
on your husbands number, regardless of which phone he actually will have
on that number?

LOL...see, it's easy to be confused. Basically, she bought a non-subsidized
smart phone and once she receives it she will activate it on her phone
number (deactivating the current HTC), so the account remains the same; that
is, one smart phone (now the new Droid), the existing basic phone and the
existing unlimited data plan.

No, the $199 price is still a subsidized price. The unsubsidized price
would be $699.

Exactly. Why i wrote, "under one or two hundred MB data, that's golden."
