I have had a Moto 815 phone for many years, and it is a great phone. I use
it as a phone, nothing else, and it is very good at doing its job, but I
need a new phone now but I can't decide which phone is the best.
Here is what I need:
Good telephone (obviously, and we have excellent coverage where I live and
visit)
MP3 ringtones (allow me this frivolity)
Bluetooth compatible with my 03 BMW 5 (I'll figure out the specifics from
recommended phones)
I don't need Video on demand (whatever they call it), navigation, or a
texting enhancements.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions. The people in the store are just
pushing the highest commissions, they don't give a damn what I need or want,
but I know I can count on phone users here.
I hope you can find this post among all the sales crap in this forum. It is
a mess anymore.

What sales crap? Get a decent newsreader, kill everything cross
posted, scorefile anything from Google Groups, kill file Larry and
presto! No more noise, no more spam, no more mess!
You have just pointed out the fatal weakness in using OE or any so-
called newsreader that doesn't allow scoring. Good scoring and
killfiling ability seems essential to reading any newsgroup now. It
shouldn't be that way but it is. <sigh>

When mine finally died, i had a whole mess of data cables/car home
charger/desktop cradles/Memory card/etc... Just got a used one off ebay
($40), changed the esn online (free)... did exactly what i want/need and
didn't have to deal with the droids in the store (priceless)
at any rate, you may want to consider any stuff you got for yours over the
years, I had way way way more invested in accessories and just got a phone i
could use my existing stuff (and contract) with, rather than the total i
would have lost getting a new subsidized phone, and new stuff....
(just checked on ebay, they currently have about 1001 Motorola E815's for
sale from $21 (bid) to under $60 (gin=get it now) over $90 (New in box never
used))
Peter Pan beat me to it. I was going to suggest ebay too.
Be sure to review the "feedback" of the ebay seller to make sure they are
safe.
Some older phones do not meet current 911/GPS requirements, so make sure the
model you like is still allowed by Verizon. My approach was to review the
website of what Verizon is currently selling to pick a model number. I then
searched ebay for that model number.
There are many slightly used phones on ebay. I think people get a free
phone when they sign up, and then decide to buy a fancy phone instead.

unfortunately, some co's change phones/model numbers like most people change
underwear As an example, my sister got an lg vx8300 from verizon, 1 week
later they discontinued it and started selling (at a higher price) a vx8350,
was anything wrong with the 8300 or could they make more with a model with a
bigger number?
at any rate, theres a neat site called phonescoop http://www.phonescoop.com/
that among many other things has a handy phone finder, select features, etc
(like up to 50 different search things) and it searches all the phones past
and present and new future ones with the search criteria you specify, and
then can read tech details/reviews etc for that
considering it's free, and if you are on this ng, may be worth clicking on
the link above and checking it out...
(ps, that specific phone is on it at http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=663 and it does have e911
ability)

Thanks so much for your comments, they were really useful helping me choose
a phone.
"Get a decent newsreader": great advice when shopping for a phone. And one
more thing, notice I am bottom posting so the Usenet police and deputy XS11E
don't have a cow.
Have a nice filtered day.

I believe that BMW can supply a list of compatible phones. If you don't
already have a copy, ask for one. Research the phones listed to see if
any of them meet your requirements.
When you reach that point, you might ask about how your top three or
four compare. . . .

Verizon maintains a list http://dts.vzw.com/how_to_use/bluetooth_car_kit.html of its phones and the
automakers and after-market BT interface compatibilities, so I will use that
once a list of reasonable candidates phones is established. Unfortunately,
from what I've seen in the BMW Owners' Circle, their lists are typically for
the current models (BMW Assist) which are different for my 'ancient' 2003
model's integrated hands-free and BT interface that predated, by one year,
the introduction of the BMW Assist.

Great advice when idiotically whining about spam which you did.

them, there's bozo bins for people like you who do.

Thank you for your replies. I have looked at used or 'new' 815s on eBay, but
I am concerned with buying a stolen phone that can't be activated. A friend
of my asked a seller for the listed phone's ESN, but the seller gave him a
different and valid ESN. When the phone arrived it had a different and
invalid ESN, and the seller refused to do anything. My friend now has a
shiny (but gutted) cell phone in his aquarium.

duh, you said it yourself, They have both used and new... your friend bought
"used" instead of new, and probably bought the cheapest from someone with
low positive feedback... my suggestion is don't cheap out, and buy a new one
in the box/never used from a reputable seller for say $69, or a used one
from a reputable seller for $30, instead of getting a used one from an
unknown seller for say $20.....
hate to say it, but your friend may have tried to cheap out/got burned, and
rather than admit his own stupidity, tries to justify it by painting ALL
sellers on ebay with a broad brush....

note from above, that is for Current Verizon phones, not the older ones, and
only ones that have/can run BMW assist... didn't phones work *BEFORE* the so
called "new and improved" stuff?
I get a bit skeptical when some tells me that ONLY their new stuff at more
costs will work, when you have older stuff that works....
point i'm trying to get at is sometimes they do things in what are billed as
new and improved, when in fact sometimes, the improved doesn't mean for the
user, but only means improved for the co and maximizing sales/profits...

e-Bay sellers have "feedback profiles". If you buy from one you can
leave "feedback"; either positive or negative. You should check a
seller's feedback before buying.
If a seller delivers what he promised, you should leave feedback to say
so. If he doesn't, and can't/won't "make good", you should also leave
feedback to say so.

Which proves nothing, unscrupulous sellers can "borrow" good feedback
from other sellers, rip off bunches of folks and neither Ebay or
PayPal will do nothing, you're just screwed.

Peter Pan,
You're making assumptions here. First off, this friend I referenced is not
stupid nor cheap. He had a very old Sprint Samsung phone and there were no
new ones offered. He had lots of accessories for that model and didn't want
to waste them so he tried to get a spare phone. He bought what he could from
someone he thought was reasonable based on feedback. He never painted all of
eBay evil, he didn't have to, he wasn't the first nor the last one swindled!
Over the years I've bought numerous items from various sellers, and in those
years had only one less than favorable transaction, from someone with
excellent feedback.
It is a nasty world nasty out there, and I'm sorry to see what has happened
to Usenet. Long ago this was a very helpful and intelligent forum where once
could ask questions and civilly discuss issues that were kept germane to the
thread. I'm not saying anything about you personally or your posts, but
nowadays there are just too many participants who rush to judgment, make
unfounded accusations and criticisms, and act like they own the place. Other
forums in which I formerly participated have turned into political
battlefields where everyone gets accused of being a 'lib' or a 'hate
monger'.
I regret seeing this become abusenet. I guess I'll need to look elsewhere to
find users experiences with their cellphones. Except for the pointer to
phonescoop, this has been futile and disappointing.
Please tell that critical guy there is one less OE client to fret about.

don't know how you arrived at that conclusion... no abuse at all.. i
specifically said "your friend may have " note the words MAY HAVE, no
accusations or absolute judgments, without knowing all the details, offered
a guess as to what MAY HAVE happened, didn't have any details about what
actually happened, so suggested ("my suggestion") how not to have a bad
thing happen to you.... Sorry if you took it the wrong way, it certainly
wasn't written the way you seem to think it was.... (text left in, i don't
see any abuse/absolutes/judgements, but maybe you could point to/tell me why
you think I said what I didn't?)
