Ginger. The Voyager or iPhone or the other clones is about as big as a
man's wallet.
Every time you little SELLphone rings next week, take your wallet out of
your pocket (or purse, of course) and hold it up to one ear while holding
the little SELLphone up to the other ear.
Which would you rather hold to your ear the week after next?

I have an LG VX8300. For my needs it's excellent. The 8350 is similar, but
slightly smaller. I prefer my cell phone to , first and foremost, be a good
phone, second be compact enough that it's convenient to carry and use, then
last, have a pile of mediocre features better left to more specialized
devices such as computers and digital cameras, and PDA's

When I decided to box up my V3m and re-activate my old E815 I was
surprised at how much better the E815 camera is. What I'm saying is
that my RAZR had an unusually bad camera and probably most cell phones
will be a little better but... I don't know of any cell phone that will
take pictures that turn out as good as even a very cheap camera so
"higher quality camera" is relative.

If you need a good quality camera, go buy yourself a digicam-- decent ones
start around $100 these days.
Your cell phone is to call people with-- or take calls from them. Next week
I suppose you'll want an electric shaver, a flashlight and a Swiss Army
knife built in there too...

While I can't disagree with you, there really aren't many phones around
these days that don't have a camera so, if all else is equal, the OP
might as well get a phone with the best possible camera.
If the OP is getting his phone under some plan it's probably not going
to cost him anything anyway so why not?

That's my predilection too.... but I really would like a cell
phone that enables me to take voice notes on occasion - without
navigating a bunch of menus or having to click a confirmation.

Eh, flash on the phones is overrated, at best. I've got a brand new VX6800
with flash, and the wife has the VX8350. The flash "works" but nowhere near
as well as a real digital camera. The 8350 isn't half-bad in low-light
situations, it's actually a little better than the XV6800. So unless you're
sure that the flash will actually help it probably shouldn't be something
you're too worried about.
I disagree with the folks that blather on about 'carry a camera instead'.
They're idiots. I like having a camera in the phone and appreciate it for
it's convenience, not it's photographic excellence. Same thing for
megapixels, once you're beyond 2mp it's pointless for most people's
point-and-shoot needs. I've got a Nikon D40 and a D40X and except for the
rare situations where I need to crop out a small portion of the picture the
added megapixels are useless. But more often than not when we're on
vacation I can point-shoot and move on using my tiny Canon SD-630 a whole
helluva lot faster than the SLR, and get equal picture quality (for
point-and-shoot vacation stuff).

I agree with Elmo on this point, Larry. a 2 MP camera provides excellent
resolution for the 4x6 print that most of us want. If you were going to blow
your pics up to wall-mural size, that may be another story. Otherwise, the
rest is overkill. I would say that, practically speaking, we've passed the
point of diminishing returns at about 4 MP max.
I agree, although I believe having a camera is a good safety feature. As far
as all the other bells and whistles, like it or not, soon all phones will
have shavers in them

How about getting the best possible PHONE and to hell with the camera.
My RAZR has a camera but I don't really expect to use it for anything.
Once I've taken it, the only thing I can do with the picture is to send
it to someone else's phone, doubtless at great expense!! The abiltity
to transfer files (pictures) to my computer over the USB cable was
blocked by Verizon Wireless; thanks Verizon, I'll get my service
somewhere else next time!

With many phones, including the LG 8350, you can very easily connect the
phone with your PC using the free program Bitpim, via either a cable or
wirelessly with Bluetooth, and transfer pictures without paying VZW, or
anyone else a dime

You can easily tranfer picture from the RAZR to your computer, it's

I got a 4 megapixel little Canon from a thrift shop for $10 "untested".
The battery was dead and it wouldn't read memory cards.
I took it apart, now being out $10 and curious, only to find one of the
tiny contacts in the card reader slot bent over double when some idiot
shoved the card in, probably upside down. One pin extends out further
than the rest and took the brunt of the abuse. It uses 512K CF cards,
unfortunately. Luckily, they're real cheap, now.
I carefully bent it back straight with a little bend in it to make
contact with the card installed. It isn't pretty, but it does work just
fine, now.
It takes beautiful pictures with its motor-driven zoom lens that retracts
inside and cover closes when turned off. I love its old-fashioned
optical viewfinder so you don't have to squint at a sun-flooded LCD to
take a picture outside.

Do any of those have a cellphone built in? ;-)

Maybe YOURS is- mine is a PDA, MP3 player, eBook reader, GPS, e-mail/web
browser, etc. It replaces a basket of devices so I have less to schlep
around. (I'm posting this on it's NNTP client right now.) The one thing I
rarely use it for it the camera, but only because HTC builds embarrassingly
low-quality cameras into their phones, otherwise I'd use it more often than
I do now.

If only they would- I wouldn't have to lug a razor on trips with me. (And
I actually have used my HTC Wizard as a flashlight in a pinch- the camera
flash LED stays on in a low brightness mode when the camera app is open and
the flash is selected!)

So were the Dell, Casio, and Audiovox PDAs I used to carry along with my
tiny cellphone. Carrying a "wallet-sized" cellphone instead of two devices
is an acceptable tradeoff, particularly in the bluetooth era. I carry my
BT earpiece on a lanyard around my neck under my shirt to avoid looking
like an extra from a bad Sci-Fi "B" movie.

You do get 30 days from Verizon (I think) to try out your new phone. Give
the Moto V9m a look. Very sturdy construction and great reception. Thin
enough to carry in your pocket (instead of case or pouch), it has a 2
mega-pixel camera WITHOUT a flash, but "normal" outdoor and indoor pics are
quite good under the circumstances. Unless you take a lot of pics in low
light (?) it should meet your needs. You can always return it for the LG if
not to your liking.
