Well, that, perhaps, plus the fact that GSM networks like AT&T and T-
Mobile do use 3G for voice as well as data. Some European carriers are
even 3G-only; non-3G phones won't work on their systems.
As you point out, this isn't true of Verizon, of course, but possibly
helps explain the confusion...
Frankly, I think Sprint wasn't out to confuse anyone but was reacting to
AT&T and Apple iPhone 3G advertising.
IIRC, neither Verizon nor Sprint referred to their EVDO networks as "3G"
in their ads until Apple launched the iPhone 3G. Prior to that, they
were less specific, talking nebulously about "Mobile Broadband" or
"Sprint Speed." |
