Default Older phone in a strong 3G market area

I was told that my older phone (3 to 4 yrs old) may not be able to
keep up with my neighborhoods' strong 3G market area and hence I get
less bars or more dropped calls. Does this make sense to some of you
that know phones better than me (that almost qualifies anyone).
Thanks in advance.

I'm on my third LG VX4400 (release date May 2002) and my wife has her
original LG VX10 (release date July 2001). Both work fine across US--
cities, interstates, rural areas. Good signal, no drops...

You were told wrong. 3G is not even necessary for good voice.

Not hard to understand why people think that 3G has something to do with
voice with all of the BS marketing about 3G networks especially by sprint.

Well, that, perhaps, plus the fact that GSM networks like AT&T and T-
Mobile do use 3G for voice as well as data. Some European carriers are
even 3G-only; non-3G phones won't work on their systems.

As you point out, this isn't true of Verizon, of course, but possibly
helps explain the confusion...

Frankly, I think Sprint wasn't out to confuse anyone but was reacting to
AT&T and Apple iPhone 3G advertising.

IIRC, neither Verizon nor Sprint referred to their EVDO networks as "3G"
in their ads until Apple launched the iPhone 3G. Prior to that, they
were less specific, talking nebulously about "Mobile Broadband" or
"Sprint Speed."

is it still wrong, even though no woman hears him?

More erroneous statements from Cellular's biggest pablum puker. Sales
reps get contract on the equipment; it doesn't matter if it's on
"contract" or not.
