Default Outa here.

Ported my number over to my new carrier today, I've been unhappy with
VZW for some time for various reasons and, contrary to popular belief,
I've had coverage problems that remain unsolved by VZW after several
years so.... I'm gone.

Gonna take some getting used to new carrier, I've been a VZW customer
since it was Air Touch Cellular!

See you back soon when you get pissed off with them. Or you'll
probably do carrier roulette. Which carrier did you move to? Hope to
God it isn't Sprint.

About the only thing that pisses me off about VZW is their locking
down of the phones they sell.

I mean... most other carriers allow you to do things like use the
manufacturer's proprietary software (e.g., Motorola Phone Tools) to
completely customize your phone as far as wallpapers, ringtones and
other such things go. Verizon, for some utterly stupid reason or
another, likes to disallow that.

Otherwise... I love their service. I have great coverage and very few
no service areas where I travel.

It's not too hard to do SEEM edits of Motorola phones to restore the
functionality that Verizon has Motorola remove.

A lot of Verizon's churn is from customers that don't understand that
the grass is not always greener. I remember Cingular trying to get me to
not leave and the logic they used was "well no carrier has 100%
coverage." This was an effort to imply that all carriers had equal
coverage because all of them had less than 100% coverage.

I've never found a place in the U.S. or Canada with GSM coverage but no
CDMA coverage (I'm sure they exist, I've just never found one), but I've
found a lot of places with CDMA but no GSM coverage. Back when AMPS was
still on in urban areas it was even rarer to find a place with no
CDMA/AMPS coverage, but now coverage has worsened with the loss of AMPS
so GSM is at less of a disadvantage in urban areas but still at a huge
disadvantage in rural areas.

Coverage is only of exclusive interest if you exclusively use the
voice service. I dumped Verizon's data service in the bay area because
of how pathetically overloaded it was on weekday afternoons; AT&T's 3G
service was wonderful in comparison. Of course that was prior to the 3G
iPhone, if I still needed the service I suspect I'd be trying to figure
out if T-Mobile's 3G worked in the places I needed it to. You should
probably thank god Apple wasn't interested in selling the iPhone through
Verizon.

I carried (and used) both a Cingular and a Verizon phone for quite a few
years and found more than a few places where the Cingular phone would work
but the Verizon wouldn't, e.g. inside the Ikea in East Palo Alto, at the
Embassy Suites in Oxnard and so on.

Verizon was better, though, but not that much better.

That was true in the bay area only when you were sitting in a Verizon
coverage hole where the AT&T coverage was good enough to use their AMPS
service. CDMA has a 6-10 dB advantage over NBFM, so if you are stuck with
a power-limited handset the CDMA service on a Verizon tower would always
beat the AMPS service on the same tower (except, maybe, if the CDMA
service is grossly overloaded which, come to think of it, might describe
Verizon service in some bay area locations). As my Verizon plan didn't
include AT&T AMPS roaming I never saw the phone using AMPS in the bay
area, though since 2G GSM has a (lesser) advantage over AMPS as well my
GSM phone very likely had coverage in the same spots.

That was true in urban areas, at least. While I never, ever found a
Verizon tower which provided AMPS service but lacked CDMA AT&T for some
reason had towers with AMPS (and maybe TDMA) but no GSM, particularly
in the mountains. I could never understand why they did this. Even
though AMPS coverage was necessarily less than complete once people could
no longer buy phones with the antennas and output powers those towers
were designed to talk to it still seemed to me that some coverage is
better than none at all even if they couldn't justify adding new towers
to fill the holes. AT&T clearly thought otherwise, however.

I have 2 MoTo phones and one LG Dare and have
no problem at all using custom wallpaper, ring tones
I make myself via MIDI or .mp3. And I use Verzion.

Just back to say I mailed off my final VZW bill yesterday, I forgot I
couldn't pay it online anymore...

I'm much enjoying the 30% reduction in monthly fees and my new BB 8900.
So far, coverage is equal or better. In a month or so I'll be
travelling to an area where VZW always gave me zero bars, completely
dead! Don't know if T-Mo will work there or not but if not I haven't
lost anything....
