My wife would like a PDA/Cell phone combination, but does not want a data
plan. I have the Samsung i760, which also has wireless b and g built in.
But, to get that phone, I had to subscribe to a data plan... which I didn't
mind in my case, since I need it for business.
In her case, she'd be content to use hotspots when available (which
actually, is more often than not), but decidedly does not want a data plan.
All she really wants is a phone that is also a PDA with built-in non-EV
wireless.
Is this possible? Or, does Verizon require data plans for all such phones?
If it is possible, which phone(s) should she be looking at.
I found this in the NG archive posted by Gordon back in January.
"At the risk of getting flamed, I have the answer for you.
I recently did this online after calling customer service.
The process was I had to select the unlimited plan to order the PDA online.
VZW told me I could change to a pay as you go soon as I activated the phone.
Customer sevice also told me to ask for data blocking and to be sure to not
turn on Active Sync before getting data block.
(They warned me people have experienced large charges due to Active Sync
turning on)
I followed instruction and everything fell into place as advertised - No
data in and No data out (but WiFi still works cost free).
Good Luck. This was another positive experience with customer service for
me."

To add to this from my own readings: to prevent huge pay-as-you-go data
charges for incidental, accidental usage - you must call TECH SUPPORT (CS
has no expertise with this) and request they place a "NATIONAL ACCESS
BLOCK" on your account, effectively making it impossible to use (or be
charged for) data services, period.

Yes. And... also making it impossible to send/receive picture messages.

You can pay full price for the phone and buy it without a dataplan, or even
sellular service.
If you think any carrier is going to heavily subsidize any phone and let
you buy the cheapest plan that doesn't sell what the phone is made
for....you're in lala land!

But it's a bigger problem with Verizon- they won't activate a "smartphone"
for cellular service unless you also activate a data plan, even if you pay
full price or buy it on eBay.
However, AFAIK, you can opt for a $0/month and $x/MB "pay-per-use" data plan,
then deactivate cellular data (on the phone itself) to prevent paying the
high per KB data charges.

Maybe because most people run Windows Mobile on portable PCs?

Cuz they are blowing out an old model and are out of stock, now they have
the 810 for $399.99 (you can see the various models via pricegrabber http://computers.pricegrabber.com/pd...rd=1/st=query/
and they still show the n800 for 184.97 from someone else, just got one from
tigerdirect for a bit more, but the customer reviews were a whole lot better
than dell's ((5 stars instead of one)))

Total BS! It's amazing how much miss-information is out there.
Verizon activated my ebay purchased CDMA Treo 650 through tech support with
no charge.
All you have to do is call them and explain that you do not want a data plan
and that you want to use the PDA portion of your phone without all the
internet junk. Very simple. You just can't activate it over the web like
you could their normal phones.
No , you cant send pictures then but so freaking what? That's why my phone
has a Sim slot and a USB cable. If I want to send photos or videos from my
phone then I will use my computer to send them. Why pay for two ISPs?

I tried to swap phones on their web page. This does not work of course so
an error msg pops up with their customer support number, asking you to call
them.
Customer service then works with their tech support to get your Treo working
as a phone with no internet.
You just have to explain to them what you are trying to do and why.
I have done this twice with a Treo 600 and now Treo 650. Fist time I did it
they did not even charge me for the swap.

same thing happened to me. It is much better going
through the customer service line on the phone, but try to negotiate
to get the prices that are shown on the website. If your contract is
over, you have much more negotiating power - just tell them that you
can easily take your phone # with you and switch to a competitor.
