The setting: a Verizon-branded
Motorola StarTAC ST-7868-W in
service through Page Plus.
Its vintage 1999 phone.com WAP
browser valiantly tries, but
fails, to connect.
From the same spot, a Win Mo 6
Moto Q9m, also Verizon-branded,
also in service thru' Page Plus,
displays the "EVDO active" icon,
and connects fine using MSIE.
Any hope for that old phone.com
browser? If so, what's called for
on my part?
TIA; and cheers, -- tlvp

IIRC, the problem is that Verizon dumbphones used a Verizon proxy server
to browse the web, whereas smartphones connect directly. Page Plus uses
their own proxy for dumbphones instead of Verizon's, the net result being
that smartphones can connect "our of the box" but dumbphones need tipibe
setup to use the PP proxy instead of Verizon's.
This creates a problem, since most older Verizon dumbphones block access
to those settings, which Google tells me are:

There's a section in the Page Plus forums on HowardForums.com dessicated
to modding Verizon phones to access data on PP, so you might check that
out. PP's official support position is that PP only supports voice and
texting with non-PagePlus-branded phones. PP phones are pre-configured
for PP data, and that you're on your own with configuring data on Verizon-
branded devices.

I was able to find directions regarding how to make these changes to a V3M.
Perhaps you can find same for StarTac.
The PP gateway is, however, buggy. It works, but just barely. Research
indicates that there is at least one for-pay WAP proxy out there ($12 for a
year, IIRC) that supposedly works well, if that's the kind of investment you
want to make to support a 12 year old dumbphone...

Of course dedicated. And very dry. Hence: dessicated. No mistake :-) .

Thanks, Todd -- I *have* looked there. Lots of differet threads. But
whenever I think I'm getting to paydirt there, my lode peters out, so
that I've come up with nothing useful yet.
The above is what those settings should look like using Page Plus proxy?
.... or *do* look like using Verizon proxy?

Yes, I meant dedicated. Sorry. Most of my posts are made from my phone,
rather than a PC. Modern smartphones (try to) correct your spelling as
you type, by comparing what you peck on the screen to their built-in
dictionary.
I try to proof before hitting send, but on long posts a few, like that one,
often get past me, sorry. A more common (and irritating) "correction" my
phone makes is replacing "to" with "too" which just makes me look like an
idiot. I suspect you'll see that one a lot if you look over my posts
from the past few months, unfortunately.
On the other hand, even with the typo, hopefully my post was more useful
than, say, a perfectly proofed suggestion that the OP call Verizon or his
travel agent...

I am convinced that Richard is one of the best trolls this newsgroup has
ever seen. It's not just the endless travel agent thing or the
suggestions to call Verizon, there are numerous other clues as well,
from the comments about battery life to the suggestion that a Pageplus
customer manually log how many minutes, texts, and MB of data he uses.
It is simply not possible for any individual to intentionally be that
clueless.

Hell last week I posted "tearjerkers" instead of "tetherers" (which
may not even be a word) and I was using a PC. It happens. This is
Usenet, not the New York Times. No big deal. The posting problem I see
is the net spelling cop. They seem to be an eternal scrooge (yeah I
know it should be scourge but it's near Xmas)...

Thanks for confirming that, Todd. Actually, a dim inkling that that might
be likely came to me once I realized that "ppcgw" might signify "Page Plus
Cellular GateWay" -- though it *could* have meant many other things too.
