You won't hear from Verizon. As long as you pay their bill every month!
If you get a new phone from them, you'll get a new contract with it.
AFAIK, there is very little benefit, to you, in having a contract! I've
never renewed any of my contracts. The contracts last for two years,
the phones for five years or so. I spend sixty percent of my time
without contract. The service works just the same as long as you pay
your bill on time.

Actually, I did hear from Vzw just last week or so with a direct call
(to my Verizon landline) from "Antonio" asking why I had not renewed my
contract, and what they could do to keep me.
I said I was not leaving, just had no reason to explicitly renew, so he
persisted with asking what it would take to get me to renew - even
offered a free month for the 3 of our 4 phones (family plan) that were
eligible for renewal, about $80, but I just said I would think about it.
I just went beyond my contract and plan on staying that way. The main
reason I don't want a free phone or credit which begins a new contract is I
get free data through my Mobile Web 2.0 phone. I work nights and read lots
of blogs during my free nights and weekends. Now that Vzw has begun
charging for data, I won't volunteer to be charged for the data use if I can
help it.
What are the chances Vzw would waive data charges on my non-PDA phone? I'll
bet not jolly likely.
I understand Wi-Max is getting nearer to public consumption and I don't want
to be under contract when the wi-max version of wi-fi phones replace cell
phones.

You must still be reading the marketing hype stories.
Even if it did magically rise above the hype and someone spent a lot of
money to build out a network why do people have the idea that the owner
would give it away?

My local newspaper (Newday) had a story in it just yesterday about how the
free wi-fi programs were failing around the country. Here in Long Island,
the counties apparently balked at commiting to support the service, so the
provider that was going to build the infrastructure for free backed out of
the plan. Things like this have apparently been happening in several states.

I don't know what Wi-Max is, but if it is related to public access wi-fi, I
wouldn't sit around waiting for too long.
