Why do you assume that your current phone is going to roll over and die?
If you don't get it wet, it should work for years or until VZW makes you
an offer you can't refuse.

I've been off contract for a while now. One of these days my poor OLD
Motorola RAZR V3m will roll over and die and I'll have to sign a new
contract. Until then, I'll enjoy my contract-free life.

Supposedly, we are going to get new technology one of these years soon.
It may be good enough that I will want to sign a contract to get new
phones for myself and my wife. Maybe it won't have anything that I need
or want and I'll hang on to the old phone until it finally dies!

Check Craigslist in your area for phones, and also for a phone repair shop.
Sometimes those third party repair shops will have some phones for sale.
Usually more than you can buy it direct from an individual, but they might
give a short warranty. My current phone is a Droid X I bought from a fellow
I met through a fishing forums site. Works fine.

I have purchased brand-new-in-box Verizon phones from Newegg, Amazon, and
many small e-tailers (Meritline; Ice Monkey) and "one deal a day" sites.
Last year I bought Palm Pixi Pluses for myself and my S.O., and they arrived
pretty much the same way they would arrive from Verizon. Pricing runs from
about $50 to less than $40. Just this week I bought a N.I.B Palm Pre 2 for
Verizon from Amazon for $70.

From what I see on Amazon, all the Verizon phones require a contract.

In one instance, last year, from Amazon directly.

This week, from a "seller on Amazon" ("Amazon reseller" sounds incorrect --
such an entity would by definition be selling Amazon products/services,
yes?) that was "Fulfilled by Amazon."

From my personal, first-hand experience with two phones purchased on Amazon,
not true.

Each phone that I purchased through Amazon was/is/will be used on PagePlus.

Amazon MarketPlace Vendors have to option to ship all their stock to Amazon
for warehousing and, when called for, shipping to customers. When they sell
such an item, its shipping becomes an Amazon Warehouse event, the vendors
needn't bother their pretty little heads about it.

That's "Fulfillment by Amazon", ak (on the river) a "FBA".

Yeah, all you have to do is give them the ESN. If it can be used on
Verizon, most likely it will work with PP.

I have heard it said a Pre-Paid Verizon phone won't work, but I got a
Pre-Paid RAZR on just fine.

Your Verizon RAZR on PP: will its WAP browser let you "go to" pretty much
any site you choose to specify? Or is it like mine, with its [Go to URL]
functionality crippled?

I can get to the "Verizon Wireless Mobile Web", which is really the page
<http://home.mobile.msn.com/en-us/default.aspx>, by clicking the
northernmost direction on the 4-way annulus around the central [Menu]
button, and I can check my Hotmail email accounts from there; but none of
the 10 items on the Browser Menu offers any way to enter an URL of my own
choosing, such as to Yahoo! Mail, or Google, or the like. You?

TIA. Cheers, -- tlvp

I have no idea what their business relationship is. It certainly wasn't
identified as "on consignment..." Maybe...

Allegedly, Verizon Prepaid (InPulse?) phone ESNs are known to Verizon, and
VZ blocks them from being activated on, for example, PagePlus.

In the case of my phones they were standard, VZ branded postpaid stock --
but discontinued stuff -- sold without subsidy or obligation of contract of
any kind. I put them on PagePlus, but they could have been activated on VZW
as well, either replacing a current phone or...

When HP was shutting down Palm I went to the store in Mountain View
where they were selling all the Palm phones. There was no quantity
limit, and some individuals were buying hundreds of phones to resell. I
gave up because the line was so long and their credit card processing
machine was not functioning.

The thing I worry about with some of the obsolete phones is that there
are unlikely to be newly manufactured batteries for them. I ran into
that problem already with an old HTC feature phone. You could buy
batteries for it but they were so old that they didn't last long.

Fair point, but these phones are not -that- old.

The Pixies all had great batteries, and the Pre 2 (not that old a device;
new to VZW in, what, early '11?) that I just acquired similarly has a
battery of very recent vintage.

For a while I was buying batteries for my old V3m RAZR. Sometimes they'd
come dated 2006. Sometimes they'd come only a year old. But they were only
costing a buck, so no big deal...

Right now I have it as a "back-up" phone because for some reason my BB
will go along fine for days, and then start chewing through the entire
batttery life in a matter of an hour or two.

If I ever give up this job and get one where I don't need a Smartphone,
this is going to be my main phone, and I don't really need internet on my
phone. I use my BB almost exclusively when Dispatch calls me and I have to
be there in 3.5 hours, so I can look at the service ticket, or to check to
make sure that when I create a new ticket it comes back to me. That's
pretty much my entire sufring experience, although I did use it once to
pick up a car stereo on eBay. Had built in Bluetooth, ya know!

So I take your answer as "Yep, my RAZR's functionally crippled, too." Or?
(And I was hoping you'd have tips for getting more out of its WAP browser.)

Are you still flogging that dead horse?

Why yes, I am. Only it's not a horse, it's a RAZR; it's not dead, it's
perfectly functional; and I'm not flogging it, I'm using it. But why
quibble about minor technicaliae?
