Default Receiving Email as SMS on Verizon?

Is there any way to receive email as an SMS text on a Verizon cell phone?
What email address should the correspondent send to in order to gateway to
SMS?

There is a way. Have your emailers send your mail to
yourphonenumber@vtext.com

yourphonenumber is area code and number all in one string.

160 characters can be received.

Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon/Pageplus: phonenumber@vtext.com
T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net
AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net
Virgin: phonenumber@vmobl.com
Boost: phonenumber@myboostmobile.com
Nextel: phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com
MetroPCS: phonenumber@mymetropcs.com

Using Google Voice is a good way to send a text message when you don't
know the carrier. Presumably they just send the message to all the
carriers, and one actually goes through. Of course you could do this
yourself as well.
