That would definitely help. I went a couple of years ago & used mine
there. Call VZCS & have them include Mexico. You'll use a local state
owned carrier & at the time it was about .90¢ a minute. I've seen on
the travel forums where a lot of people use phone cards instead as its
a lot cheaper. But it is a lot of fun to lay on a beach with a gentle
breeze, a gorgeous blue ocean, a cold drink & call your co-workers
back home & let them know how your doing )

Do they still offer North America's Choice? That includes calling in
Canada and Mexico. Of course, if you're not on a current plan, changing your
plan temporarily may be... well... not advisable.

Steve...
Canada is NOT included, unless you get the package for America's
Choice/Canada...
Mexico was NEVER included in ANY package and is not offered
with one at this time.I'm sure it has to do with the costs Verizon gets hit
with.

I am on a North America's Choice plan. Last year I put about 4000 minutes
on my phone in Mexico (along with about 1500 minutes in Canada), plus
about 500 minutes of calls to Mexico from the US, without additional
charges. I'll probably top that this year. If you needed it this plan,
at about $20/month more than a more-or-less equivalent America's Choice
plan, was a fantastic bargain, pretty much the only real bargain on
Verizon's price list.
Of course the last bit is probably why Verizon dropped the plan in
May, though I'm happy I'm grandfathered. When the plan was offered
the best way to get service for a trip to Mexico was to take the plan
just before the trip and then cancel it before the end of the 30 day
trail period. That's not possible now.

It isn't nearly as bad as Verizon's coverage map indicates, though. I
suspect Verizon's map might date from when they owned IUSACELL in
2003(?), and IUSACELL has expanded coverage since then. The Verizon
map also doesn't show places where Telcel AMPS is available.
I've been to Cancun and the CDMA coverage is fine there, though I'm
not sure how far outside the city it extends.

Phone Verizon and get them to enable international roaming. The service
will cost you $0.69 per minute for both incoming and outgoing calls,
though that includes calls back to the US.
If you don't like that and you have an unlocked GSM phone you could buy
a Mexican prepaid SIM (Telcel's coverage is best), but whether this
saves you anything depends on what calls you make, or get. Incoming
calls are free now (though they'll probably cost a US caller $0.20 or
$0.30 per minute; forwarding your Verizon phone to the Mexican one
will cost $0.24/minute if you pay for the Internation LD Value Plan)
but, last I asked, it costs about $0.30/minute to phone a Mexican
number and $1.00/minute to call back to the US on that phone. If you
mostly want to be able to call the US you're better off with Verizon's
rates.
Cingular's roaming rates in Mexico are $0.59/minute, for what that's
worth.
There is no longer a cheap way to do what you want that I know of.

I specifically remember NAC including major cities in both Canada and Mexico.
Wow. Coverage in Mexico sucked, anyhow. Looks like they covered Tijuana, maybe,
and a couple towns east and south of there. BFD - you could probably get a
signal from VZW's San Diego network if you're in Tijuana.
I would think they'd at least cover a couple big towns like Mexico City and
some of the more popular resort destinations, but it doesn't look like they
did (keeping in mind that I don't recall exactly how far south Mexico City
is...)

Interesting, if you want to lug your laptop to Mexico. Otherwise you
can rent one at a cafe or Internet store. One caveat; I was at an
internet store in Cancun & decided to e-mail the kids back home. I
found that the Mexican keyboards don't have the @ symbol. Very
interesting. You have to use something like the alt-code to enter it.

The Mexico plan might be local. Here, near the border, one can get
Mexico included.

VZW's San Diego signal in Tijuana is not very good. You have to be
right on the border to even have a chance. The last I heard, Nextel
had the best cross-border service in TJ.
