Default Skype and Google Voice on iPad w/Verizon

I'd love feedback and comments from anyone who has an iPad about how
well it works to use Skype or Google Voice on an iPad.

I'm fed up with my Droid, and I'm trying to decide between getting an
iPhone or an iPad. I use the email and navigation features of the Droid
a lot and would definitely prefer to have a larger screen. I would also
make extensive use of the iPad's photo tools in my photography work. I
can justify paying for a second monthly bill (iPad monthly fees) and
keep the Droid's account active for when I want a small phone in my
pocket (rather than carrying an iPad). If I get an iPad, I would use it
as my primary device for my $dayjob which involves ~200 miles of driving
everyday, and making 10-20 phone calls daily (to different numbers every
day).

I want to be able to select a phone number in email and have it
automatically dial. Is that possible with gmail on the iPad, selecting
and having it dial thru Google Voice or Skype? Are there any issues
with using a bluetooth headset with the iPad?

Finally, is there a usenet newsgroup for the iPad? I don't find any
groups with "ipad" in their name on my news server, and trying to find a
group by searching with Google Groups is useless - it returns mostly web
results (not usenet results).

Thanks!

Strange, this news server doesn't carry comp.mobile - it goes from
comp.misc to comp.multimedia and then comp.music. I'll bug the admins
to add it!

Thanks

JC-

There is the comp.mobile.ipad newsgroup.

I've tried Skype on my old iPad 1, but not to dial a telephone number.
I was accessing the internet via a CradlePoint WiFi router with a
Verizon USB modem, connected to someone using a laptop computer. I
could see the person at the other end but the video was a little jerky.
It would probably work fine for voice-only calls in a quiet environment.

By the way, what photo tools are you referring to? Are there some Apps
I'm not aware of? As far as I can tell, you may be able to transfer
photos from a camera to the iPad using the Camera Connection Kit. But
then you can only view them, E-mail them, print them or synchronize them
to a computer.

Perhaps there would be better iPad photo information at Apple's Aperture
Support Forum:

Or at Apple's iPad Support Forum:

I'll be using a head-set, often using it in my car. I'm looking to use
it primarily for voice, not video. Basically, to use Skype or Google
Voice on the iPad instead of my cell phone.

There are several uses:

1) When the camera can use an SD/EyeFi card (all of my cameras can),
you can have the photos transferred directly from the camera to an iPad
as you shoot. This gives you many options including:

A) The iPad screen is bigger/brighter/better for the photographer to
use to view the photos to ensure that everything is in focus, etc.

Hand the iPad to the client and this will allow them to see the
photos you are getting, if you are achieving the photos they want from
the session. Much better than having them try to determine this on the
small screen on the back of the camera, and it keeps them out of your
way as you are working.

C) You can make a quick selection of your picks from the session to
quickly share with others online, etc., immediately after shooting.

2) Portfolio review. It is interactive, gets people "playing" with
your photos as they touch/drag from image to image, zooming in, zooming
out, etc.

3) To keep and display camera manuals, lighting diagrams, etc.

4) Shooting applications such as DoF (Depth of Field) Finder, TPE (The
Photographer's Ephemeris), many of which are only available for
iPhone/iPad and not available on Android devices.

I would continue to use my computer for the heavy photo work (using
Lightroom and Photoshop).

I have been frustrated far more often than I have found solutions when I
search Apple's forums. But I'll give those a look, thanks for the pointers!

In the meantime there are lots of free servers that carry it. I read
it on nntp.aioe.org...

I also use aioe, but it is more restrictive about replying to
cross-posted articles so I prefer using eternal-september.

Eternal September does have comp.mobile.iPad.

Before you screw up and become a slave, jc, wait until VZW has the Acer
Iconia Pad Android Tablet (10.1" screens are much nicer than iPad).
Unless VZW hobbles it all up into uselessness, which isn't out of the
question, the Acer is an amazing tablet. Drop by any Best Buy and look
at the wifi only version before making that Ipad mistake. Put some of
your favorite movies, music and other media on a USB Flash plug and plug
it into the Acer's USB host port. You can play any media straight off
the plug in lots of formats no iPad will ever play unconverted.

Droid is just too small. Android 3.1 Honeycomb fixes that problem with
the tablets.

iPad just sucks.;......

It won't run iPad applications, and I want an iPad to run those
*specific* applications I listed in my other post.

I'm not an Apple fan boi, and I bought a Droid because I thought it
would be better than an iPhone by not being subject to Apple's draconian
rules, closed ap store, etc. But there are a lot of apps that I'd love
to run on my phone that are only available for iPhone and iPad, not
available for the Droid.

The device is useless if it doesn't run the apps I need. It doesn't
matter how big or bright or pretty the screen is, it needs to Do The
Things I Need It To Do.

I had to refresh my groups list 3 times, including shutting down and
restarting my software (Thunderbird) before it finally found the
comp.mobile hierarchy at Eternal September.

Which apps? The Marketplace isn't the only place Android apps are
available. Amazon is just an example of a rapidly expanding new one.

List the apps and let's see what we can find......(c;]

I tried, many years ago, to use gimp instead of photoshop. (At the time
I was trying to migrate off of Windows to Linux. Gave it up, eventually
bought a Mac instead.) What I learned is that there are no gimp forums
for users. All the gimp forums are for programmers, and if you want to
use gimp to do something you can easily do in photoshop, but gimp can't
do it, their "advice" was to patch it yourself. I don't want to learn
how to patch gimp, I want to process my image files. If there's a
photoshop action and I want to do that process on gimp I have to
deconstruct and reconstruct it in gimp, learning all the programming
underpinnings of gimp, instead of just installing and running the
application under photoshop. I'm not going to go down that road with a
tablet device. I want to use a device that has many other users, and
many well written applications (programs) that do what I want to do.
When there's a hot new program out, I want to be using the device that
gets the first program, not using the "afterthought" device that might
get the program months or years later, if at all.

If you have programming skills and knowledge of the application area,
your best bet may be to write your own program! If you can't/won't
write your own then you will have to learn to live with what is
available or pay someone to write it to your specifications!
People with such skills generally expect to be paid well and promptly!

> If you have programming skills and knowledge of the application area,

I don't. (This should be obvious from what I wrote above.) My role in
this area is one of a product manager. I can help define the features
that will make the application useful to customers and thus make it a
profitable application. (This is a skill that most enginners are
woefully lacking. Read the book "The Inmates Are Running The Asylum"
for deeper understanding of this problem, should you care.)

From my first exposure to computer programming in 1979 (Using DRDOS
BASIC on a RS TRS80 Model I) I have never wanted to be a computer
programmer. If I did, I wouldn't be just writing apps for my own use,
I'd be writing apps for others to use, to buy, to make me money.

You say that like it's a problem. I'm quite happy to let someone else
write the apps. I just plan my device purchases so that the device can
utilize the apps I want to use.

Duh?
