Default SMT5800 a good choice?

Getting ready to take the plunge. Anyone have one of these phones?

I'd like to get some opinions. Also, I've seen a couple cellular review
sites state that this phone is 802.11b/g capable. Verizon says no. But what
is the truth?

Verizon is **probably** telling the truth. IF you get the phone from
Verizon Wireless!!!!!!!

The "WhizBang 699", if purchased from Verizon Wireless will probably
have some features disabled if Verizon thinks their use MIGHT cut into
its profits!!!

For the truth about what the phone is capable of, check the
manufacturers specifacations! And DON'T buy it from Verizon!

If I sound a little prejudiced, it's because I DID by my phones from
Verizon (Motorola RAZR V3m) and they HAVE BEEN CRIPPLED. The ability to
transfer files to my computer over a USB cable has been disabled. I
COULD pay Verizon Wireless rates to e-mail a photograph from my phone
over the VZW network to my computer. . . . Or i COULD re-enable the
feature by doing a "SEEM Edit" and voiding the warantee on my phone!

Next time I will try to by on the open market and just activate on
Verizon's network.

Any suggestions as to where could I buy this phone on the "open market?"

Amazon.com! E-bay! Costco? Sams?

I've never done it. I just wish I had tried it!

Alltel says they have coverage in Turnersville. Just carry the V3m to
the main verizon store for the area and they can reprogram it with
Alltel firmware that's NOT crippleware and you'll find all kinds of new
menu selections like COPY or MOVE or whatever.

Here's what it looks like with Alltel Firmware installed:

is better..(c;

Over on the right where "step-by-step-instructions" is, select Motorola
V3m and the PDF instruction book specific to Alltel's firmware pops up.

Starting on page 15 are instructions on how to take pictures to either
internal or direct to the microSD card, a CHOICE you have on a real V3m.
I always take the pictures straight to the 2GB microSD. Simply remove
the card and plug into your computer. The pictures are jpegs and the
phone numbers them by date/time and photo number for easy ID.

I move them off the card onto the PC directly, then the card is ready
for more crazy pictures. Just plug it back into the phone...real easy.

Piss on Verizon and their hobbleware.

PDF page 25/26 says:

> copy or move files between
> phone & memory card
> You can or move copy files (such as pictures
> and photos, video clips, and sound and music
> files) from your phone to the memory card to
> free up phone memory.
> Note: Moving a file to the memory card
> deletes the original from phone memory.

If you've pictures on the phone memory, just move them off to a card
this way. It'll move any file it finds, except the preprogrammed pix in
rom, of course. Music and movie files are handled the same way, Copy or
Move or just play them straight from the card....straight off your PC.

Have some fun with the Verizon shitheads. Print out the PDF file
instruction pages from the Alltel online manual. Take them with you to
the Verizon store and ask them how to get to this feature and that
feature of the V3m phone like it shows in the manual. Watch 'em
squirm...(c;

(sigh...) I just found out that the SMT5800 doesn't have a touch screen. So
I bought the SCH-i760 instead. I took your advice and didn't buy it from
Verizon. I didn't have to renew my contract by doing it this way either.
