Default Storm OS 5.0

The Verizon version of the updated Storm OS, 5.0, was released this
week. As someone said to me at Verizon, all the pervious versions were
patches, this is whole new OS. Oh baby is it.

I have it up and running. It makes for a truly fabulous phone. The
Storm 2 will be running with this OS, but the improvements that 5.0
have made to the Storm 1 make it an even more invaluable tool. Great
stuff.

I made this upgrade yesterday and I concur with Boron. This is a significant
upgrade which makes a truly noticeable improvement.

I'm glad but surprised to hear that, on other BB phones OS 5 doesn't
seem to do very much, I've run the latest beta on my 8330 and the only
real change I see is a negative one, the type gets VERY small in the
new browser and I've been unable to make it change permanently. Other
than that, I don't see any big difference, I went back to the previous
OS.

Well, it's just speculation, but maybe your experience stems from that you
used a beta and not the final product. I don't know. But I immediately
noticed that flicking a finger caused the screen to scroll more smoothly and
with more momentum (not yet quite as well as the iPhone, but much improved
and more useful), that typing seems more efficient, and that screens change
faster. I haven't noticed any downsizing of font sizes nor any negatives at
all.

Anyone else's experience?

Probably. Other stuff is broken also, most significently BlueTooth
doesn't work on several of the OS 5.x betas. For me, that was a killer
forcing me back to the earlier OS.

Based on reports from others on other BlackBerrys, OS 5.x seems a HUGE
improvement on the Storm and the beta versions do little to other BBs
except break things. FWIW, I tried an OS 5.x beta on a 8900, it also
broke BlueTooth and other stuff.

I know they'll have to fix that for the final release.

FWIW, I suspect the Storm, being a new concept for RIM, needed fixing
and OS 5.x does that. Other, older designs had major problems fixed
with OS 4.x and therefore OS 5 doesn't change very much.

5.0 on the Storm is *much* nicer than 4.7. The phone is actually
responsive, and the flick scrolling is a huge improvement...

*But*, I (and several others on some of the fora) have found a really
obnoxious bug. Sometimes the phone dialpad stops working. You can't dial
to make a call (unless you want to dial all 0s), and you can't dial
once you're in a call (so no voicemail for you). The root cause seems to
be (and this is great) having the portrait keyboard set to "full keyboard".
Set it to multitap or sure type and this fixes the problem. Neat, huh?
