Tether PDA to VX6100

I've never tethered my VX6100 to my PDA. I see it is possible to buy a
cable that connects to both my specific phone and PDA model. If I don't
have a data plan is it possible to occasionally use my phone with excellent
1x coverage as a modem for my PDA? I understand it would count against my
voice minutes. I understand if I send/receive enough data I will be
charged. I just would like to know if VZW must activate something on my
phone/account before I can try this. My maximum use would be infrequent and
light.
