Default Text messages arrive twice

A number of the text messages I receive come in twice in quick
succession. The messages concerned aren't just from one person, so it
isn't necessarily a problem on the sender's end. On the other hand, in
the case of the person who texts me frequently, some of his messages are
duplicated and some aren't. I have a Treo 700W. Any ideas on what's
causing this and whether it can be fixed?

In weak or unreliable signal areas, the message might get through but
the phone is unable to send the ACK that it was received. This would
cause the system to resend it when it can. Is quick succession
something like 15 seconds to a minute or two?
