text messaging

Does anyone know if it's possible to send/receive
text messages to/from phones that are in a different
network like GSM (e.g. exchange text messages with
someone on the Cingular network and possibly with
folks outside the country)?

My cell phone broke and I'm considering switching
to Verizon and getting a RAZR.

I routinely send/receive SMS from my Verizon phone to people on other
networks, Cingular, Cricket, Sprint in the USA. I don't think any of the
people I exchange SMS are GSM users.

Most all Cingular phones are GSM.

Cingular is GSM, as is IIRC, Cricket.

To the OP. Yes it is possible to send inter-carrier
messages.

Cricket may depend on the market in NC they're CDMA 1900.

Verizon to Cingular GSM text messaging has been supported since around
mid-2002, at least.
