Treo 700w SD Wifi card shows available spots but won't connect

I have a brand new Treo 700w, with a brand new Palm SD Wifi card ...

I can see available Wifi spots when i am close to them (shows full
strength signal).

The ports are fully open and unsecure (i can hook up right away with my
laptop).

Treo shows it 'available', so i click on connect, and it trys (says
'connecting' ... then it just goes back to 'available' ).

I have spent hours on the phone with Verizon and Palm suport techs ...
they say that all of the settings are right and it should be working
.... but it's not ... Arrrrrg ...

Any suggestions ... ???
