Default Unlocked CDMA phones on Verizon?

If I find a phone which I like which Verizon does not sell, can I buy
an unlocked CDMA version of the phone and use it on the Verizon
network? Are there guidelines for which phones will or will not work
on Verizon's network?

How about a dual CDMA/GSM phone?

Highly doubt you would be able to do this. Software on verizon phones
is very specific. You'd have to somehow get the correct software on
the phone and get verizon to activate it. It's not as easy as swapping
a sim car like a gsm phone.

IIRC, Verizon allows unlocked phones on their network but only if it's a
model they sell- i.e. you could use an Alltel Razr instead of a Verizon
one. I don't believe they'll activate any model they didn't offer.

(Sprint's even worse- they only allow Sprint phones- even the same model
sold by a different compatible carrier isn't allowed.)

In theory, any 800/1900MHz CDMA phone will work, but again, Verizon only
allows certain models to be activated, and these must be GPS-enabled (to
comply with E-911.) Ironically, however, Verizon prepaid resellers like
PagePlus will activate virtually anything.

You'd better confirm the use of specific models with Verizon.

True, but some Verizon features like *228 option 2 won't work with the
Alltel software. You'll have to update your PRL with a PC and cable.
