Laast week I got two notices that I was getting an update to my Droid
Incredible. Both times the phone came back on with a message that I
didn't have enough memory for the update. When checking the phone there
is tons of available memory, both in the phone and on the card. I have
32 photos and no downloaded music of graphic-hogging games. When
checking update status on the phone it says that it's up to date.
My daughter in NJ has the same phone. She got the same message. Her
local store made her do a total reboot and she lost her photos and her apps.
I called tech support today. The rep verified that if there was an
update, it was an HTC one and not a VZW update. She also stated that
whatever it was it was not critical.
My phone is working perfectly except for these error messages for the
"update" The tech support rep thinks the phone updated even though I
got the message. Anyway, my phone ain't broke, so there is no sense in
trying to fix it. Knowing that the update is not critical, I'm leaving
well enough alone.
Since I got the message and my daughter got the message, I'm just
passing this along to others with HTC Incredibles (old not global) and
advising you to not mess with the phone.

Exactly same thing happened to my Incredible.

Next time tell her to plug the phone into a USB port. It becomes a
drive. The photos can easily be copied off to the PC as a backup and
later returned if needed after an unintended wipeout. The apps should
be easily restored via the app store. The app data, possibly not.

Boy I'll bet tech support really loves all the calls it gets over a
screwup like this...

Translation: The rep has no clue...

Mine too. If things are working I try to avoid updates. Sometimes you
can't though.

Thanks, but I imagine most already have had the 'update' experience
about the same time we did with no harm done. Likely only those who
consulted their local Verizon store were screwed...

The local store shouldn't be doing anything that could remotely destroy
data without telling the person explicitly an repeatedly that they will
lose everything on it. They should also mention that there are backup options.

I can't imagine the amount of trouble I'd have to go through if I did
the same to any of my customers...
There were two updates one took the phone to android 2.3 something. Not sure
what the other was for. No real major changes.

After the update debacle that wasn't an update the other day, my phone
said it was using 2.2.
Tonight in response to this post I checked the system info screen and
it said I was still running 2.2. Then I checked the system updates
screen and it still said I was up to date. Then with no prompting from
me it downloaded an 87.7 Meg update. Then it said the update installed
ok and needed to reboot. I pushed ok and it said rebooting. I waited
for 30 minutes and it was still frozen on that rebooting screen.
Finally I rebooted it myself. All appears ok. The system update screen
still says I'm up to date and the system info screen still says I'm
still running 2.2. ??????????? !!! I guess time will tell if anything
is broken...
I got to updates too, sounds like the same ones. No error messages
were generated on my HTC-I
