Verizon U-turn on abortion rights program
Carrier vacillates over request by Naral Pro-Choice America to use
company's mobile network for a sign-up text messaging program.
September 27 2007: 11:04 AM EDT
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Reversing course, Verizon Wireless said Thursday it
will allow an abortion rights group to use its mobile network for a sign-up
text messaging program.
The announcement came a day after the Basking Ridge-based unit of Verizon
Communications Inc. said it had denied a request by Naral Pro-Choice
America for the program.
"The decision to not allow text messaging on an important, though
sensitive, public policy issue was incorrect, and we have fixed the process
that led to this isolated incident," Verizon Wireless spokesman Jeffrey
Nelson said in a statement.
"Upon learning about this situation, senior Verizon Wireless (Charts,
Fortune 500) executives immediately reviewed the decision and determined it
was an incorrect interpretation of a dusty internal policy," Nelson said.
"That policy, developed before text messaging protections such as spam
filters adequately protected customers from unwanted messages, was designed
to ward against communications such as anonymous hate messaging and adult
materials sent to children."
The program by Naral, based in Washington, D.C., lets people sign up to
receive its text messages by punching in a message to a five-digit number.
Known as "short codes," the five-digit numbers have become a popular way to
get updates on everything from sports to politics to entertainment news.
Other leading wireless carriers have accepted Naral's request to use their
networks.
Nelson on Wednesday had said that abortion was among topics barred from
mass distribution based on the company's code of content, but noted that
the code had been developed "before text-messaging became a mass-market
phenomenon."

Yes. I am sure that Verizon felt it more appropriate to have logged on their
servers communications that will provide evidence of racketeering operations
of NARAL!
LOL!
Oh, that wiretapping order from the judge will help a lot to the monitoring
of NARAL's communications.

No need to wiretap for those sorts of communications, any agent who
wants to know what's going on can simply go to NARAL's web site and sign
up for the mobile text message announcements. The fact that Verizon
Wireless would attempt to block that sort of thing is beyond ridiculous
and I suspect they relented due to the adverse publicity and the
firestorm of legal actions that would occur if they did not reverse
their decision.

I am sure that they can.
Is there something that makes you think that no one will who is adamantaly
opposed to NARAL?

In view of the Constitution being written for the people, I do not see where
any legal action brought by NARAL would stand a chance in a court of law.

A better question would be why conservatives love to lie about
liberals, as you did with your question.

I can ask YOU why liberals like to lie about others who don't goose-
step in line with liberals? And you know I have PLENTY of evidence of
liberals lying in this newsgroup alone.

the answer is obvious: they lie because they have no facts to support
their positions.

To a point, you are right; however, Verizon has no business restricting

Its a non-issue now, considering that Verizon reversed its policy and is
now allowing NARAL Pro Choice America to follow through with its text
messaging service.

Actually, they don't. In a complete reversal of what conservatives are supposed
to stand for, it's liberals who want to be left alone to do what they wish with
their own bodies.

Conservatives want that too. But when push comes to shove, conservatives

That's not fair- a conservatives wants to do what he wishes with his
