I have used ATT and Verizon for at least twenty years, concurrently. Let me
assure you that ATT third rate. Verizon blows it away on a daily basis.
FYI: The "new" ATT is not anything like the "old" ATT.

Is the iPhone locked? If it isn't, why wouldn't any GSM - based phone/data
system's SIM card work? I have a Blackberry 7100 that I don't use any more
for various reasons, but mostly due to it's lousy reception. When I bought
it, it came with T-Mobile service. After six months I got them to give me the
code to unlock the phone so that I could use pay-as-you-go phone service in
Europe (T-Mobile's roam charges overseas were outrageous - over a dollar a
minute at that time as I recall while TIM (Telecom Italia Mobilare) charged
less than US$0.30/min domestically). In an effort to get better coverage, I
switched from T-Mobile to Cingular after my service contract period was up.
All I had to do was remove the T-Moble SIM card and replace it with a
Cingular card and Voila! I had a Cingular Blackberry. It was then that I
found that it wasn't the service that had lousy coverage, it was the phone
itself, so I went down to the Cingular store and found a tiny blister-packed
'Go-Phone' (Motorola V190) for $30. I popped my SIM card out of the
Blackberry and into the Moto, and I've never looked back. The Blackberry now
resides in a bureau drawer, and Moto gives me 4-bars here at home where the
Blackberry barely gave one.
My point is that if GSM phones are unlocked, it looks as if you can use
anybody's service (as long as they are GSM).

or a cable to transfer wallpaper and ringtones. OOPS! You can't do it

verizon does cripple the bluetooth on their phones, but you can
transfer wallpaper and ringtones w/out hacking the phone- you just use
a serial cable profile. there's no problem transferring via a cable
to begin with- they just don't provide you the software to do it.
bitpim is the most popular choice for transferring files.
and since this conversation is in the context of the iphone, it should
be pointed out that the iphone has the same limitations on using user
ringtones, and the first reports are that the iphone's bluetooth is
also crippled... and more so than most verizon phones- for example,
verizon bluetooth phones have been coming w/ their dial up networking
profiles enabled, which is not true w/ iphone...

Once Verizon found out they called me to bring it in for a firmware update.

While i expected the feature set to be somewhat limited at first
introduction, i must say i'm somewhat shocked to learn that apple has
not yet enabled and/or has intentionally crippled bluetooth features
but then again... apple wants to tie everything iphone related to the
itunes music store, hence you have to open an itunes account to even
activate the phone. Look for them to offer ringtones via itunes soon
though it may be possible to assign itunes purchased music as a ringtone?

Apparently it's also no secret that the iPhone is almost equally
crippled. According to engadget.com, who's playing with 12 of them, you
can't tether a computer to an iPhone via bluetooth or cable, can't
transfer files via bluetooth, and can't even use it as an iPod until it's
activated with AT&T (so much for unlocking it! It only allows emergency
phones calls and no other functions if a non-iTunes activated SIM is
inserted.)
I'm surprised Verizon passed on the iPhone- it's crippled almost to
Verizon spec and beyond!

the bluetooth is actually crippled beyond verizon spec. :P
