Default VZW Mobil Web

I've been a VZW customer since 9/2001. A week ago, I thought I'd try out
Mobil Web for a month ($4.99) using my CDM9900. Well ... I spent a couple of
hours this weekend futzing with the browser (OpenWave) ... getting
familiarized. NONE of the websites I entered in manually would display with
any graphics. Everything is test that is all split up ... definitely not
useable. But if I use one of the canned browser choices like Satellite
Weather then ... graphics display.

Of course, there are premium ($) websites like the Wallstreet Journal for an
additional $4.99 a month. Do the premium accesses have graphics? I looked
at some websites on a friend's Treo on T-Mobile ... displays just like my
PC.

Not thrilled.

Why not take a look at www.mobileweb4u.com ??

It's more like $35 per YEAR. Kind of rudimentary, but it's web access, and
it works.

This is first I've heard of "mobileweb4u". I looked over their website and
read a few of the customer testamonies.

I have an Audiovox CDM9900

I'm in the dark about "WAP" and the technicals. For any given website, does
WAP display graphics for any website I go to? As Verizon set up my phone,
not many websites are viewable ... but for their approved/compatible ones.

Thank you for the link. L^)

You're welcome. I first heard about it here too.

My grasp of cellphone Web browsing is somewhat elementary.
It appears to me that some websites (maybe most or all, I don't know) are
able to determine that you are browsing via cellphone. This is a good thing,
because trying to fit the content of the average webpage onto a tiny
cellphone screen would often be as useless as it is illegible.

Those sites which aren't set up for "miniature" browsing usually give you an
error when you try to access them (little blue box reading something like
"HTTP error" etc, etc. Others, like eBay it appears, have a special format
set up so you can actually use them on the small screen.

......So, AFAIK, the answer to your question about WAP displaying graphics
is..........well, sometimes. I do know that if you go to eBay, do a search
and come up with a response, yes, it will show you a picture.

As far as how Verizon set up your phone, if you choose any WAP besides
Verizon's, you will have to reconfigure your browser. I was intimidated by
this at first, but it's a lot simpler than it sounds. In fact, MW4U will
direct you how to do this on your specific phone.
They have a list of "supported" phones. "Supported" just means they can and
will provide you with exact, step-by-step instructions for browser
re-configuration. I, and apparently many others, have found that if you own
a phone which isn't on their list, you can often find a similar phone of the
same brand, and the instructions are very similar, if not exactly the same.
For instance, IIRC, they "supported" the Moto v60i, but not the v60s. The
setups were almost, if not completely identical.

The only downsides are:
1/ Whereas the $5 per month VZW plan gives you unlimited use (I think),
other WAPs use airtime. If you have free nights and weekends, use it then,
while it's "free", and only when necessary during peak time.

2/ Upon re-configuring your browser, you will temporarily lose the ability
to browse to VZW's "My Account". This is not much of a big deal, since
browsing to "My Account" on the phone itself doesn't do a helluva lot for
you anyway-----
a/ Account Balance - big deal! There are many other ways to
find that out....
b/ My Plan - again, who cares? You need to check what plan
you're on??
c/ Usage - the only one that's kind of useful, but again, there are
other free and simple ways to get it (call #646---sends a free
text message to the phone).

3/ MW4U isn't as reliable as VZW WAP. It goes down occasionally, and you
have no choice but to wait.

Before there was 1-800-FREE411, I used to use MW4U to look up telephone
numbers instead of calling VZW411 at a buck-fifty a clip. Saved me a small
fortune when I needed a phone number while away from home.

Hope this answers your question, and a couple maybe you didn't ask!!!

Dean

Wowzers! I'll sell anybody WAP access for a lot less than that!

Anyone buying? How about $2/month? I've got a couple T1s worth of tier
1 bandwidth here to use (yes, actual 4-wire T1 circuits), and a 100mbit
colo on the west coast.

Seriously! If a lot of people want this, I could possibly do it
cheaper, like $1-1.50/month and still provide good service and make
enough profit to keep myself interested, just depends on volume. If you
folks actually use services like this, I'll be happy to provide cheap
service...

Thank you again! My CDM9900 is on MW4U's list.

For VZw's $4.99 Mobile Web, regular air time rates/timing applies. I have an
old Single Rate West plan with loads of night/weekend mins but only 300
peak. It's sufficient and my cutoff is 8:00pm. VZW has an unlimited Mobil
Web option for $15. I like what you've told me about MW4U better than what
I've experienced on the first week of Mobil Web.
