Just bought a new Verizon Treo 700p without the install CD, or anyother CD
that may come with the retail box. What am I missing if I just download the
install what I find over at palm.com? That is essentially just the Desktop
software.

I installed a friend's non-functional Treo 650 (Palm OS) on Verizon with
just the downloaded Palm Desktop off Palm's website.
At first it refused to sync via the pushbutton cable to the desktop
machine. VZW's local yokels hadn't a clue, but had the number of a
special VZW guy in TX that knew how to make it work, so I called him from
the store and had him email me his instructions. Sorry, but they're at
Joe's computer, not mine, so I can't give them to you.
Basically, you have to make a choice on how you want to update your
various Palm segments, EITHER over the air on VZW or via the cable,
directly. It wouldn't allow BOTH. So, if you want to get emails via VZW
and update your contact list via the cable, you go to the VZW webpage on
your account and SET each one, separately, to EITHER. The webpage
contacts VZW's hobbled-up software in the phone and forces the phone to
ignore the other choice, which I thought really sucked.
I have Joe's 650 set to get emails over the air and all the Palm updating
of its features over the cable. He only makes changes to Palm Desktop
while he's setting right there in front of it on his laptop, so why
expose it to possibly be in a dead zone on Verizon where it wouldn't sync
because there'd be no signal to sync it to. The cable is better. His
interest was to get emails from clients on the road, which normally works
just fine.
Don't look for this information about EITHER-but-not-BOTH on the
websites. It's not anywhere I can find, which might scare off savvy
users from buying it. Our problem was the phone had been set to sync
everything over VZW's network, effectively turning off the ability to
sync over the cable for anything! Don't forget to tell Palm Desktop AND
VZW's controller over the webpage which you want to sync how....After
that it seems to work ok.

Larry,
I think I didn't make my question clear. I wasn't talking about syncing
via the VZW website. I'd never trust that. I was just wondering what
software is on the CD that I can't get on the Web site. On the Web site
I can essentially only download the Palm Desktop and nothing else. I
presume there's other stuff on the install CD that I'm missing, but
perhaps it's unimportant.

None that I know of. Palm Desktop connects to both the internet connection
and the cable connection. The firmware inside the VZW phone is where the
hobbling is....either, but not both. Palm Desktop has a setup to select
which inside the computer. It doesn't care what your carrier is.

Seems that what I lose out on is Versamail and conduits that allow me to
sync Microsoft documents with Docs To Go. I don't need either, so I'm fine.
