Lately I've been getting text messages from people I don't know. Not
selling anything, just boring stuff like, "Call me when you get home"
or "How was the movie". The senders are sometimes from vtext.com but
often as not they have seemingly valid phone numbers, but with faraway
area codes. I've tried responding to some of these people that they
have the wrong person/number and they either ignore me entirely or
reply with a WTF? type of comment.
The problem seems to be getting worse, as I used to get wrong messages
perhaps once a week. Now it's as many as 4 or 5 a day. The other day
one message repeated itself about 5 times, marked as 'Duplicate
Message' by VZW. I thought perhaps there might be some sort of tech
problem so I called Verizon. Waste of time, that was. Said my only
option is to block text messages entirely. I don't have a text plan
and don't need one but neither do I want to totally turn off texting
because once or twice a month it comes in quite handy.
Anybody have any thoughts on this? Should I push for more tech support
or is this happening to lots of people?

If you don't want to turn off text messaging, Get a messaging plan, or you
will get charged for every one of those text messages you get in error..
Think it's 10 cents each... Course from your post that's only 40 or 50 cents
a day, so since you don't want to turn off texting, you must want to pay the
money... why not minimize it, and get a message pack?
What about turning off text messaging temporarily? Surely, if these people
are texting you because they are mis-typing the phone number of someone they
intended, and they get no reply for a month, they will get the correct
destination phone number from their friend.
I haven't seen anyone asking this question get a reply indicating that Vzw
can selectively turn off messages from designated senders. The replies I've
seen seem to be a) turn off texting, b) change your phone number, or c) buy
a text plan so each message doesn't cost you.
You might also browse howardforums.com for a solution. That's a much bigger
forum.

Have you returned a text message to tell them they have sent to a wrong
number?

Unfortunately, yes, same ass*oles that spam cell phones with voice calls,
try and call back, no such number.. reply to email/sms message, no valid
address....
Thanks for the replies. I will go to vtext.com and set up some options
there.
I know I can just get a plan but I'm very resistant to spending $$ per
month when I would send/receive a total of maybe 10 messages, at most?
I have repeatedly tried to tell these people they've got the wrong
number. Some of it is spam (not much) and those I'm well aware go
nowhere. But as for the friendly, "hey, call me when you get home
messages"? I reply successfully and say, "hey, you've got the wrong
number" and they either ignore me or send me a message that says they
don't know what I'm talking about - they never heard of me.
It's almost as though there's a system glitch and valid messages are
getting cc:'d to me. Tthe cynic in me says that this would be a very
sneaky way to get people to commit to text plans.

I just checked my vtext.com message setup, and there is also the option
to allow messages only for your <nickname>@vtext.com (thus NOT for your
phone number). Just make sure your nickname is not an easily guessed
string - mine got figured out at one time, and I started getting a lot
of spam in the wee hours of the morning (retards were sending messages
too big to fit within the SMS limits, so obviously a "name permutation"
spam blanket attack on vtext.com), so I changed my nickname, and they quit.
