Default CD Drives Quit Working

I have two CD drives on my pc (windows xp/service pack 2; AMD athlon
xp1700+) and am having a problem with both CD drives. Both work fine after
starting or rebooting the computer, but after some period of time (not
consistent or predictable), neither one works until I restart. When they
stop working, everything looks okay in the device manager, but if you try to
read any known good disks, neither one works. The device manager always
says the device is working okay and drivers are okay, even when they don't
work.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

may have your master/slave settings incorrect. Master is at the end of the
"ribbon" and slave sits in the centre, and the other end in the motherboard.

Doesnt produce those symptoms.

Wrong with two drives on a single ribbon cable.

You did manage to get that bit right, likely by accident.

Very good - except we are on the wrong forum for this type of comment.

Now on to the OP's problem. There are several possiblities:
1) I suggest checking with your motherboard maker and see if you need
to upgrade your BIOS.
2) Check with your CD manufacturer and see if there are any driver
updates.
3) Sometimes your power supply may be getting weak/overheating.
4) Have you tried just connecting only one CD drive - maybe you are
overtaxing the power supply rating with two drives, plus HD etc.
5) You could also have one CD drive that is drawing too much power -
again use only one for the the time being and see if it works. If it
does try the other one. If only one is giving problems - replace it.

This is called troubleshooting - good luck.

HTH,

John

You haven't established that it was an inherant problem the
parenting would attempt to correct, rather than having
caused.

Mindless pig ignorant silly stuff.

The same stupid pig ignorant claim was once made about schitzophrenia too.

Is your complete incapacity to actually quote properly the result of your abusive parents too ?
