Default Do they make ultra-small computers?

Something very portable, without a fixed monitor? (Not a laptop) but
with all the usual USB, video, & LAN interfaces. Peter

I have used 3 "matchbox PC" 's,they had the size of a matchbox,
and on a 200 pin connector, all the periferals,2 comports, parallel
printer port,VGA Hires, keyboard and mouse pio connector,
floppy port, and ethernet port.
It came with a IBM microdrive with the same footprint.
Totally compatable with an ordinary pc.
But they dont make them anymore, I think.
Googling: "matchbox pc" shows the former producer.
If you enable pictures while googling, the second picture
is the one i used, from http://www.tiqit.com/.
But I am sorry to say, that they dont sell it anymore.
It was expensive, about 3000 dollars.

Of course _they_ make them. Sadly you forgot to mention what 'ultra-small'
means to you or what work you want it to do or what sort of horsepower it
should have or what operating system it should run. I take it that you
don't want to build your own (which is what I always do) so something like
this http://www.apple.com/macmini/ might work (or it might not). If you
want to stay in the Windows or Linux world you might like something larger
but still relatively small like http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-620/pd
Of course there are other more extreme things out there like the PCs that
are made for automotive applications

Heavens, this is grist for the mill. I want a small other computer
for certain purposes that I want to leave no trace on the main
computer. Thanks, Peter

Wow, that sounds a little creepy. Anyhow... I'd like to augment what
John McGraw said about Mac Minis. You can, in fact, run Windows or
Linux on the Mac Mini, but you'll have already paid for Mac OS X
nonetheless.

Computers become smaller and smaller, until you can't fit
connectors on them any more. Pico-ITX is an example of a
small form factor. Using flash based storage can make the
entire package pretty small. Depending on power needs, you'd
also have to include a wall adapter as part of the size.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pico-ITX

The dimensions in millimeters are shown on the right hand side
of that web page. A Pico is 4" x 3". But you still need to
provide protective packaging, which is when the size begins
to balloon.

The other variable in the size race, is CPU power. The VIA
processors are relatively gutless. They may be able to do
HD video, but not with a lot of headroom. And certainly not
any exotic formats. So perhaps it can play a DVD movie OK.
I'd want a CPU frequency above about 1.5GHz for comfort,
for that kind of thing, as well as a good GPU with video
decoding in it. That's not typically one of VIA's strengths.

This is an example - 4" x 3", and has a 44 pin IDE connector
and SATA, to connect your SSD or other kind of flash drive.
Runs off 12VDC power. Number of amperes required - unknown.
Not stated in dataaheet. Looks like it could be a recently
introduced product (so there might not be reviews for it).

http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=39

http://www.viaembedded.com/servlet/d...d_file_id=9263

This one probably would have been nicer, but it's not for sale.
This was a reference design. And relatively old by the looks of it.

Thanks, but on reflection I'll go for an el-cheapo laptop. I just
need something to download from the internet items that might contain
viruses. Just the other day one actually turned off my firewall and
I had to do a system restore to get it back!

They make "appliances" for downloading. The trick is to find
a good search term for them.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ZyXEL-NSA-21.../dp/B0030YC2Y0

That one is a NAS Appliance, which runs Linux inside. You add your own
disk drive. There is a one bay and a two bay version. The idea would be,
it dispenses with LCD monitor, keyboard/mouse, and connects to your
network, and you use things like a web browser to drive it.

Since the manuals are a few years old, I'm guessing this one is near
end-of-life. But this illustrates the idea at least.

http://us.zyxel.com/Products/Details...E-AF05A93B2F92

ftp://ftp2.zyxel.com/NSA210/user_gui...0_3.20_ed2.pdf

There is a review here of a two bay version, but I like the look
of the one bay device, as it's a bit smaller. The one bay device
would likely use 7W less electricity, by not having the second
drive.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30323/75/

It has roughly the same circuitry as a home router, but probably
uses a bit more power, because it has to power one or more SATA
drives.

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/image...rd.jpg_425.jpg

"ZyXEL is using the Marvell 88F5182 Orion processor at 500 MHz,
there is 128MB of RAM and 16MB of flash."

And with those facilities, it runs some kind of Linux.

Thanks, this looks great and at the moment I'm doing searches on it
via AcrobatX. The eMule examples should prove interesting.

Heavens! Just last night I copped a virus whose name I've forgotten
and it was attached to my Firefox V10 browser.

I had to download a fixit called "ComboFix" on advice from a forum. It
cleaned it OK and produced the following text file report:

Have you tried an offline scan with the Kaspersky CD ?

It looks like they have a new version, as the size has changed to 237MB.

"Iso image of Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (237 MB)"

I'll have to load that up in a VM for a look.

You should try some virtual machines too, as it might help isolate
you a bit more from the viral content. If your virtual machine
environment becomes infected, you just blow it away and create a
new one. All the while, your main OS remains uninfected.

You can use VirtualBox for that, or even VPC2007 (from Microsoft).
The difference is, VirtualBox may give you better OS support, so
some things function a bit better. While VPC2007 may be easier to use
during the initial setup.

For an OS, you could use any old Linux LiveCD, or if you have a
Windows OS you're no longer using, that can be transferred into
the VM environment and you could use that.

It's even possible to do P2V transformation, but with Windows
Activation, that isn't really all that good an idea. For example,
this tool allows taking a snapshot of a physical system, and making
a virtual one from it, for running inside a virtual machine. To test
this, I took a snapshot of my current WinXP machine, and put it inside
a virtual machine, such that I was running two copies of WinXP at
the same time on the same machine. Within the virtual machine window,
of course it complained that the hardware was entirely different, and
that I should activate the OS again. I can't do that, without a second
license key. While doing that experiment, I kept the network
cable unplugged (no calling home). The OS would only remain running
for around 72 hours that way, and the experiment isn't all that
useful. But it does demonstrate, that at least if there wasn't a
thing such as Activation, you could have an OS inside a VM,
to better protect you from viruses.

Disk2vhd (P2V software)

You can use Linux inside a VM, if that would work for you. Firefox
runs in there for example.

I'll have to take your advice because just now the fixit software made
"adjustments" to the activation properties of AcrobatX (converting it
back to the trial version) and probably some other software as well.
Fortunately a system restore took all back to normal although I
thereby lost some recently installed software.

I'll check out VirtualBox.
