E-machines T2742 Wont Boot

When I press the Power On/Off button on my desktop nothing happens.

I thought it was a bad power supply so I ordered and installed a new
one. This did not resolve the issue.

Some observations:
- The Power On/Off button's LED wont light up.
- There is one LED that is green on the Intel motherboard above the
RAM. I believe this is for Standby usage (according to documentation).
- wires from on/off switch are not loose on the motherboard side
- on/off switch seems to be ok - clicking normal, no loose wire
- I tried disconnecting power to all peripheral devices leaving only
power to the motherboard and this did not make a difference.

Any ideas from the experts out there?

I've seen the power circuit on the mainboard go bad.

You could try jumping the PSU connector for power on and see if it comes on.

That basically means that for some reason the power supply
isnt being told to turn on given that a replacement doesnt help.

Its showing that the motherboard is receiving
standby power from the power supply.

Worth trying connecting the two pins to completely eliminate
any possibility of a problem with the switch and the wiring.
You do sometimes see a switch still click but not connect
the wires and sometimes you can get a break in one wire too.

If connecting the pins on the motherboard that the power
switch goes to doesnt get it to start, try resetting the cmos.
It can sometimes get into a funny state that stops it from starting.

Dead power supply AND dead motherboard. This is the typical eMachines'
sudden death. If yours follows the pattern I've seen with these. There
is usually no warning before it goes kaput, or only signs most people
miss.

Once in awhile, it turns out to be the processor. AND power supply.

The good news. Standard mATX case. Fits any micro ATX motherboard. And
there's no difficulty activating the XP license. (You still have to,
but you don't have to call Microsoft on the phone)

You can get a new motherboard that's compatible with your processor.

Emachines are notorious for having motherboards die !

Thanks for all the responses. I reset the CMOS but now the Standby LED
on the motherboard wont even light up. Also tried connecting the pins
on the motherboard to no avail.

If any other ideas let me know. Otherwise it looks like I'm buying a
new PC.

I have had several e-machines will not start if the CMOS battery is low, and
they tend to use them up at a fairly rapid rate compared to most of pc's. It
may be worth your while putting a new battery in before you try anything
else.

Yeah, looks like the motherboard has gone to meet its maker.
