Default Entering BIOS setup on a Compaq Deskpro 4000

Hi

How do enter the bios setup this? DEL, F1 or F2 do not do it.
I need to install a hardrive into and I'd like to know the speed of it.

Also, there is no cooler or fan on CPU, should there be any?

Compaq uses F10 to access bios.

Many of those deskpros have a large cpu heatsink and do not require a fan

hold ctrl down while it gets going.

Many old Compaq desktops had big hs and no fan. Beware that it will run
much hotter with the cover off. If theres no bios temp detection, run
it a while with the cover on but not fixed on, then remove cover and
check the cpu temp quickly. If its ok, its ok.

Thanks for the tip, but it does not do the trick, nor does F10 as "philo"
suggested.
Someone told me, that it might have the bios on the HD.
Is that possible for Compaq Deskpro 4000 ?

Oh :( Compaqs stored some stuff on a small hdd partition, if youve
replaced the hdd or fdisked it, yeah you may have problems. If so you
can get some bios floppies from the compaw site - but only some. Last
time I looked istr it went as far back as 733MHz, nothing older.

Why do you want bios access anyway? Old Compaqs will autodetect hdds.

So, basically, I add HD and and I am up and running?

That would be good. There is a 40x CD in it already, so that should
work too?
And if I add a sound card too?

I'll try tomorrow. To late now.

Well all the Compaq's I've ever seen used F10

Almost, if its like the ones I've done you may have to restart it a
couple of times, thats all.

And if its like the last one I wasted time on, it'll reject most hdds.

THe thing with Compaqs is they whine about every little hardware
change. In short, removing or adding a piece of hardware, especially
disk drives or RAM gets you a little message, that may include a way to
enter the BIOS.
