I have a situation that CHKDSK starts every time when my computer
starts but it stops at stage 5 while is checking free space. There my
computer freezes.
When I want to skip CHKDSK somehow I get blue screen.
I have disk Seagate 80GB ST380011A so I downloaded SeaTools to make
dignostics, made boot CD and started Seagate Diagnostics.
Quick Test, File Structure Test, Full Test, Memory Test,... finishes
but when it reaches 100% it freezes. Sometimes it freezes at QuickTest,
sometimes at File Structure, and so on... It can not finish diagnostic
and show me summary of test.
You know where problem is?
How could I know is everything okey with my disk drive?

Try the diagnostic with the drive in a different system to
see if the problem is with the drive or the rest of the system.
Likely its the rest of the system since it freezes in different places.

Try it in a different system, as a slave, dont try to boot from it.
Have you tried chkdsk /f which will attempt to fix the disk next time
you boot, before Windows starts.

I do not know WHERE in your harddrive the problem is, but I would conclude
that it is failing and should be replaced soon.

And if you don't have (easy) access to a different system, get
hold of a boot-CD like Knoppix or BartPE.
Or even more simple: a memtest86 CD or diskette.

First thing you should do is backup your data before the HD or PC fails.
Then run diagnostics. As someone else mentioned, after backup have
been made, run chkdsk /f, clean out all the temporary files, clear out
deleted files, clear out delete internet temporary files, delete
internet cookies and defrag the HD. And make sure the HD is not full.
If you have a lot of junk and temporary files or a badly fragmented HD
sometimes it can get stuck. I'd do as much as I can from Safe Mode.
I thought that my bootex.log file is corrupted so I tryed CHKDSK /r but
after that I couldn't get out from blue screen of CHKDSK. Tryed to run
Windows at Safe Mode but it stops at one *.sys file. Then I tryed to
run Last good configuration but also it runs CHKDSK so I couldn't run
chkdsk /f.
I have to buy new hard drive to backup my data and to run diagnostics
on a existing hard drive.
I have warranty on my HD so it's important to me to figure out is it SW
or HW problem to replace the disk if it's necessary.

I will make backup when I buy new HD, so I have to wait tommorow for
that. Then I'll run chkdsk /f and clean up disk + defrag (I don't
think that disk is defragmented ever - but it isn't so old so I didn't
made that jet). I'll do all the tests running the HD as a slave (can't
in other way).

I just wanted to see from your expirience what could it be happening
with my HD. If it is probably HW problem to replace the disk on time.
But I'll do the diagnostics tests first...

I am having a similar problem.
What I do is mount the bad disk as D: and put a clean boot disk in
master. Then if I can get the machine to boot, which is essentially
all the time, I run CHKDSK D: /f on the bad disk. It cleans up a whole
bunch of problems primarily with security descriptors. Then the bad
disk will work again as a boot disk.
