help me buy a MOBO to replace broken one?

Either my mobo or cpu is dead, but the comp won't post and I've tested
everything else. Anyway, I want to buy another mobo to replace this one in
my comp that I am using only as a file server. I can't find this old asus
anywhere, but I see a few other brands on Ebay and Amazon that I might could
buy. I want one that already has the cpu on it (or comes with it).

I see links in this NG all the time to other online places that have
comps/mobos, so could help me find one that will put my fileserver back like
it was before? The 478 socket boards on Amazon and Ebay were less than $200.

Despite the enjoyment of buying via ebay that apparently so many folks seem
to get I find it a crap shoot and would rather send my money to a known
reputable supplier when possible. Newegg actually lists nine 478 boards that
they have in stock. The Asus one below is $60. Additionally they list seven
cpu's that can be purchased as well, within the price range of $200
together. If you go this route don't forget the HSF necessary if just buying
an OEM cpu.

Thanks alot. I've never had an micro atx board before though. I just ordered
it, so I hope it will still fit in my old atx case (holes line up?). Anyone
know? If not, I need to go ahead and buy the case now too, but there is a
store here locally that I can buy that from.

What is this "hsf" you are talking about?

I ordered that board. Hopefully my old cpu will work in it though. I don't
know if it's the cpu or the mobo that is bad :( If the cpu don't work, then
I will order the cpu or go buy a new comp. For a file server, I can get
almot the equivalent to what I have now for $400 at walmart/sam's, so I
don't know if I can sink any more money into this old comp. I had no idea
cpu for this old board was going to be over $100.

did....let me guess....my heat sink/fan on my old ATX mobo won't work on

A HSF comes with a retail purchase of a CPU. Most folks buy the CPU OEM
(Original Equipment Manufacturer) without a HSF and purchase a better
one seperately, espcially since the provided HSF does not cool well when
overclocking a CPU.

A microATX MB is simply shorter than a standard size ATX MB (less PCI,
peripheral slots). There's no reason for it not to fit in any size
case, as the mounting holes are standard with any ATX MB, micro or
otherwise, AFAIK.

Motherboards don't come with HSFs for the CPU. You may be thinking of
the heatsink and/or fan that fits onto the North Bridge and sometimes
the South Bridge chipset chips.

I think the linked board might've been an example (only).
Ideally for a fileserver you'd get as many SATA (or other)
drive ports as possible and Gigabit Lan.

From re-reading your original post and responses from other posters I'm
starting to wonder why you think you've nailed the problem as being either
the mb or the cpu. When you turn the computer on what happens? Do you get
any lights? Does something come up on the monitor? Do you hear any noises?
Give some details to corroborate your theory so folks can help with your
premise.
