Helping my Dad - How to get to Access Point Admin Console?

My Dad has a Linksys Router that does not have wireless. He just bought a
Netgear Access Point WG602 v3. When he puts in 192.168.0.227... it does
bring up the admin log in for it... but the default password does not work
and it just seems to die.

The owner manual says you have to set your computer to a static IP and have
the Netgear Access Point connected directly. Is there really no way to get
to the access point's console while hooked to the Linksys router... maybe
telling router what IP the PC needs to use.. opening up the access point
IP... so on. It is going to be a pain to have to take it out of the
network, hook it up directly and change the PC to use a static IP ever time
a change is needed . If he had gotten a Linksys access point, would this
have not been a problem?

Trying to help my Dad and appreciate any thoughts and advice.

Is he accessing it wirelessly? If so, try it wired.
Recheck the manual just in case the password is not as
expected and watch the case of letters. Try it without a
password too, and look for a reset switch and the procedure
to reset to defaults in the manual.

Yes, if you have the router only acting as a (due to it's
built-in) switch, you could have the PC and the access point
connected to it, with the PC manually set to the same static
IP range as the default for the access point and access it.
What you don't want to do is let the PC pick up an IP
address from the router's DHCP service, UNLESS you
reconfigure the router to assign within an IP range that
corresponds to the default range the access point is in-
this alternate approach should also work, providing you can
guide him through reconfiguring the router, and assuming the
router has a provision for changing the range it serves (but
this is a pretty basic and expected feature, it should be
available).

Some (Many) routers will also allow assigning a static IP to
a particular system, but it requires the same amount of work
as other alternatives with no real benefit, unless you had a
reason to always keep the PC at that IP address. Even so,
if that's what you want to do, it should work... though you
may need the MAC address of the network adapter of the PC in
question to specify it in the router reconfiguration menu.

It is a typical configuration step no matter the brand.
It's not that much of a pain really, mostly depending on how
well you can guide him through it if you're not on-site.
