interesting portable hard drive question

I have a western digital 250g hard drive that I enclosed in a Mad Dog
Megavaoult enclosure. It has been working fine for the past 6
months. I recently let someone at work borrow it, and they said my
hard drive shot craps and the system could not find the drive.

I brought it home, and sure enough, I could not see thje drive
either. Before accepting my failed drive, I took the drive out of the
case, and directly into the pc, and the drive works fine. I put a
known working hard drive in the case, and could not find that drive
either. I went and bought another hard drive enclosure today, and
still can't find any drive when I put a hard drive in the enclosure.

Any thoughts?

What are you doing USB cable wise ? Some enclosures are picky about the cable.

Ditto with power to the enclosure, are you using the new one with the new enclosure ?

I recently read a post that had almost identical wording.

Someone responded that they try a better quality USB cable.

Evn though I thought the reply not to be a good one...the OP posted back
that they
tried a better quality USB cable and it worked.

Here is the weird thing. I have tried firewire, and differant USB
cables

Update, when I plug in the USB or firewire, with either the new case
or the old case, my CPU will find the case. However, when I click on
the drive, it says please insert a drive into ....

Well the "new cable" answer seemed a bit fishy to me...but it's one of those
things
that can't hurt to try.

The controller within the drive enclosure must be bad then

It seems as though the hard drive is not getting power. The LED
lights on the both cases light up, however, I can't hear/fell the hard
drive spinning. I also find it hard 2 beleive that 2 differant cases
are having the same problems

You are right...that does not seem likley...
about all I can think of now would be to try the drive with different jumper
settings...
but I really doubt that that could be the problem

I really appreciate all of your input on this. I'm getting completely
flustered, as I just tried to plug both the new and old case, with 2
differant hard drives, to my laptop. Both times, windows found the
case, but not the hard drives inside

When the drive in the enclosure was working just a week ago, I had the
jumper removed. Since having this problem, I have tried making the
drive, slave, master and no jumper, but still not working

And is something that some have found fixes the problem.

He said he tried a new enclosure, so its very unlikely to be that.

It does happen tho, two bad ones in a row, just very unlikely.

That may well have been the problem then, it should normally be jumpered master.

You sure you connected power to the drive
when you put it back in the enclosure now ?
