Hello all, my external usb HDD has failed. At the moment I don't want to
burden you with the details, but would like to hear if anyone has got some
useful advice or repair from IOMEGA. They have so far not replied to my
email which briefly explained the problem. Thanks in advance.

Ya know, you could provide those detials...... Some things are user
fixable with these external drives.
Inside the cage is a standard IDE (some of the newest are now SATA)
hard drive. You can use the hard drive internally to recover data.
Sometimes, if the controller-board is intact, but some data is damaged,
it can screw with the filesystem, and the drive may be readable with
some recovery utilities.
And lastly, not a recommended fix, because it's tricky, is to swap
controller boards with an EXACT, IDENTICAL unit.

Yes thanks, but I'd like iomega to deal with this; the thing is just over
one year old and has been only rarely used. There is no stuff to recover
from it.

Sometimes when it comes to an RMA process, if you provide
too many details it will interfere with the process for
whatever reason, perhaps they think you're not sure and are
still trying to find a problem, or perhaps they doubt your
diagnosis, or for whatever reason I suggest:
- Email, and telephone them, providing only the bare
minimal details necessary, that you have their %%%%% product
and it has failed and needs to be RMA'd. Just because they
hadn't responded last time, doesn't necessarily mean they
won't this time. Rarely email might be blocked as spam so
try a different subject, and fewer words are also less
likely to set off spam filters, as might sending the email
from a different domain. However, all of this is avoided
using the phone instead, though it might be harder to find
the telephone #?
On their website it looks like they want you to set up a "My
Support" account,

Hello,
Here is what I originally emailed them; it seems the barest minimum.
"This has stopped working, it seems to have been corrupted. PartitionMagic
7.0 shows error 114. I have used quick format which said formatted
successfully, but no improvement resulted."

So why are you asking here if you don't want anyone here to respond on
possible repairs? This is a newsgroup, not Iomega's personal site for
free help. If you want Iomega to deal with it then you'll have to
wait until Iomega deals with it. They have phone support, live chat,
and forums.

With the dearth of information that you provided, all you'll get is a
bunch of wild guesses. Probably the best one already given you was to
remove the hard drive from the external USB enclosure and test it
internally.

experienced when trying to get support from iomega..
