laptop battery

I have just bought a new Lithium ion battey from a reputable company. After
charging XP reports it as 67% charged. Same in Ubuntu where
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info (I think that is the correct path) gives
3400mAh when charging stops, compared with a max capacity of 5100mAh (the
unit is rated at 4400mAh).

This suggests to me that the unit has deteriorated in storage and has less
than a year's life left in it.

Am I missing anything or should I be sending it back ASAP?

I'd send it back. Even reputable campanies ship defecrtive product from
time to time. What makes them reputable is how they deal with that.

It can take a few charge discharge cycles for the system to work out
the capacity properly. Thats usually documented in the laptop manual
and applys to the new battery as well as the original one.
