Lost my Digital display on Viewsonic VP191B LCD

Hi

I have lost the digital (DVI) display ability of my Viewsonic LCD monitor.
I am presently using one of the (two provided) analog (VGA) monitor inputs
in order to view!

I know the problem lies with my Viewsonic VP191B monitor, because I
connected a *different* LCD monitor to the digital (DVI) output of my video
card,
(ATI X800XT All In Wonder) and my HANNS-G JW199D LCD monitor displays
that same DVI video card output correctly!

This *DVI* display problem occurred after booting up an UBUNTU "Live CD"
which I have done many times previously. I default booted into UBUNTU
(NO cheat codes) and the Ubuntu desktop and O.S. displayed OK.
However, after my Ubuntu session, I re-booted back to Windows, after which
I lost ALL DVI display including POST screen,"splash" screen etc.

I have used several Linux "live CD`s" in the past many times and never had a
problem.
I think whatever my last "live CD" session did to determine and setup the
video for Ubuntu,
"broke" something in the monitor itself?

Any further ideas or insight into this matter would be appreciated.

Perhaps the EDID information that the monitor sends to the video card,
is corrupted. I understand it is possible to rewrite the chip, on some
monitors, and maybe that is what happened.

Now, to experiment with the thing, it would really help to have
a second, analog monitor, connected to the VGA connector, so
you can continue to work on debugging the Hanns-G and the DVI
connector. Otherwise, I don't know how to guarantee a way of
bootstrapping you out of trouble.

You could uninstall the video card driver, and presumably that
would result in only some low resolution formats being supported,
but I don't even know if the DVI would have output, without a
driver installed. Chances are, the analog is considered the "primary"
output.

There is a tool here (download link in upper left hand corner), which
will display in plain English, the contents of the EDID. Of course,
if you are plugged into the DVI connector, you won't be able to
see the output on the screen :-) You really need a second monitor,
to help fight this problem.

First off, thanks for your reply.

To make my situation perfectly clear:
I *CAN* view the video card DVI output to my HANN-G monitor (also Analog
VGA)!
I can *NOT* view the same video card DVI output to my Viewsonic VP191B LCD
monitor!!
I must now use an Analog (VGA) output from the same video card to view, when
using my Viewsonic LCD monitor!

When I have the Viewsonic connected via DVI cable to the DVI output on video
card,
I get.... nothing! That is, a blank screen all the way from button push,
start to finish!
Though, I CAN hear Windows booting up to desktop!

I dont even see the Viewsonic blue default *DIGITAL* info box, which used to
display/flash several times during normal bootup!

Not sure what you mean by "moninfo"?

Then you must have missed my first post. The URL at the end of it, is a
page on Entechtaiwan with a download. Moninfo reads the EDID, and the purpose
of running it, is to see if the EDID is functional at all. Since you cannot
see that monitor's output, you need to run two monitors. The monitor that
works, can display the moninfo.exe output screen, showing the info obtained
by probing the dead monitor on its DVI cable.

If the OSD (on screen display) won't appear on the screen, then something
else must have happened. The most prevalent faults in LCD
monitors, are the inverter and CCFL backlight. A screen will go black, if
the backlight is not working. That isn't the problem in your case, because
the VGA connector on your monitor still works.
