Magnetic Card Reader

I am working on a project, where I need some information about IT equipment
to read the information stored in the magnetic strip on a plastic card. I
need to be able to read the magnetic strip and use the information in an MS
Access database on a Windows pc.

I have asked in one store for pc equipment, but they didn't know anything
about it. I have searched at little at the internet, but I am not quite sure
what to look for.

Will any card reader be okay, or are there or are there technical standards
I should be aware of? How does a card reader basically work? Is the
information sent to the pc like keystrokes, or ...???????
