If you have 4x SATA and 2x IDE you will be able to install 4 SATA and 4 PATA
drives..

IDE allows 2 devices per port, and SATA only allows one per port..

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing stopping you from using each of
those ports at the same time.

Yes, normally this is the case.

If that is not enough, you can add adapter cards (which emulate SCSI) and add more drives.

The OP doesn't mention if his board has any PATA connectors or not, but I
would expect there to be at least 1 for legacy drives.
Besi, you can attach 1 drive per SATA connector, but you get a master and
slave on each cable when using PATA, so if your motherboard also has a PATA
connector, then you can run 2 devices per connector, in addition to any SATA
drives/connectors. If the board has no PATA connector, then adapters can be
bought that will convert a SATA connector into a PATA connector.
