Recent Black Friday sales encouraged me to purchase a Maxtor
200GB PATA100 Hard drive.
I didn't know or care what particular model it was for the
price but was surprised to find this "Maxtor Basics",
DiamondMax 21 drive is actually a Seagate 7200.10 with 3
year warranty. Seagate had claimed they would eventually
ship their drives in Maxtor boxes, but I hadn't any occasion
to buy a recent vintage Maxtor until now.
For those who don't recall, the mid to lower tiered Maxtors
previously had 1 year warranty (this reduction from their
prior 3 year warranties started around Q4 2002 (IIRC)) but
Seagate has 5 year on their branding of same drive models.
Won't it be funny now to see claims that Maxtor drives have
lower reliability and someone should buy a Seagate instead!

Staples was out of them by the time I got there, but they also
advertised external 400GB WD drives for $100 that were often 500GB.

Just today I installed a new 400 gig Seagate ATA100 in a friend's machine
(It's about 75% formatted right now)
The machine has 5 internal drives and two external !!!!
Seems like only yesterday I was *nervously* handling a 2 gig drive...
it seem big and scary !
