Default Maxtor One Touch drive died - need help

Hello!!! I have a problem. My maxtor 250Gb external one-touch drive
doesn't work anymore. I have tried everything with no result so now I
just want to get back the files on it. I checked with a recovery
program and it seems that all my files on the drive are intact. The
question is: All the various recovery-programs talk about recovering
damaged files but since the files aren't damaged (the problem seems to
be with the MBR or something else) is there any other ways of getting
them "out"? I'm not interested in creating an image-file of the whole
disc since most of it is just a back-up. However, there are about 20
Gb of files that I don't have anywhere else that I really want to get
back. Is there some program you guys can recommend? Sorry if this
question seems a bit stupid or unclear, I'm really new with
computers... PS Does maxtor have some sort of diagnostic program to
determine the error for their external hard-drives? I checked their
homepage but I only saw the Powermax program which only seems to work
for non-external harddrives.

This is my backup of my now wiped clean harddriv. Sucks big time

cheers

Try again. whip the maxtor out of the external, and plug it in, in place of
your system drive. Pile it on some books, and hook it up. Then `powermax`
it.
best wishes..OJ

Hi,

Don't Panic.

Since you're newer to computers there's that tendency. It may be worth
the effort to speak with someone at Maxtor.

I use a Maxtor OneTouch 200GB for backup. As somebody said do not panic.
Take your time.

Some basic questions:

What operating system?
From your message it sounds like you can access the external. True?
Did you use Retrospect to backup or did you simply copy the files to the
external?
I am assuming you have tried something simple like completely powering down
off your system. Making sure your external has been turned off. Booting
your system. After the system has booted turned on your external.
Have you used the system program from the control panel to check your
hardware to make sure there is not a problem with your USB port?

This is my start :-).

Can anyone please tell me how was this solved, I am having the same problem with my MAxtor one touch II. It was working fine, and one day I plugged it as usual and waited for the screen which prompts my password to unlock and then I can see it under my computer, but instead my PC considered this as a new hardware and asked for the driver to be installed. I re-directed the wizard to teh same driver on my OC and on the CD with no luck, and I even un installaed the whole Maxtor driver and re-installed, with the same result. I was not using the retrospect, I manually back up my data.

Can you please help
