<snip>

it's still under warranty...
so just go to maxtor's website and follow their warranty procedure.
you will need to test the drive first.
the software needed to run the harddrive diagnostic
probably came with the drive...
but if not...you can download it free.

warranty wont get your data back.

perhaps Acronis TrueImage 8 recovery software might,

TrueImage has the ability to create a boot recovery disc. I have found this
software invaluable...........from a totally unreadable (by any other
method) hard disc I recovered 95% of valuable data of the hard drive.

You will obviously need another, working, comp to download and create the
boot disc.

I have no allegiance with Acronis just like software that does what it says
on the box.

for $50 its worth a try plus you got the backup software you should have had
before.

The harddrive has died and the data is not recoverable by reasonable means.
(Yes, for around $1000 a data recovery company could get it back.)

0.Do you need a working HDD or do you need information from HDD ?
1.what is exact HDD model ? (yes yes, all the small and big letters/numbers
on sticker)
2.is it making any sounds ?
3.If I understood you correctly, did you try to reinstall win xp on your
crashed hdd ?

If the HDD will be opened - most likely your warranty will be void and null
