works very very slow...most of the programs get "not responding errors"

That's a memory error. Remove the Memory Dimms, clean the contacts and
re seat one at a time and restart. Test with only one DIMM at a time to
isolate the problem if it's a card failure. If it was only due to the
edge contacts being dirty then all will test good. This has nothing to
do with your hard disk.

What is your hardware ?

What is the motherboard brand and model number ?

How many pieces of RAM are installed ? What size are they ? What speed ?
And what socket are they installed in, on the motherboard ?

When the message appears, does the message come from the BIOS (i.e.
before Windows starts booting), or does the message come during the
Windows boot process (you see the hard drive LED flashing as the
software loads) ?

If you want to test for memory errors, there is a free test program
(memtest86+) at http://www.memtest.org/#downiso . That program can
be loaded on a CD, or onto a floppy. The floppy will boot the computer
and run the test.
