Default Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick doesn't work so well with game

Okay I have a 2 month old AMD X2 4600+ system with Windows XP-64 bit
running on it. I just plugged in the joystick and XP recognizes it and
all the buttons, rotate x-axis, rotate y-axis are recognized. I play
JO: Typhoon Rising and I wanted to use a joystick instead of keyboard
for movement. I go into options to change controls. Under joystick,
the box is checked and when I try to change the move left, move right,
etc. to move joystick left and move joystick right, etc., it doesn't
register. The only things I can change these things to are the buttons
or the hat button movements. Is there any way to fix this or is it
because the game just doesn't recognize it because of the axis rotation
the joystick allows for?

MS has the joystick properties in control panel. Use it to test and
calibrate the joystick. If it calibrates (moves) under the Control Panel
settings then it's JO. Make sure the joystick is enabled in JO, in some
games you have to set the control to joystick from keyboard.

It must be JO then. Yes, joystick is enabled. It shows up in control
panel and I can calibrate it, but maybe it's the z-rotation feature of
the joystick that throws it all off. The microsoft website is not
helpful.
