No V92 modem is (or ever will be, IMO) obsolete. That spec is hard
up against the fundamental limits of POTS service. External modems
port to any machine with a serial port, any os, any application,
and generally have indicator lights, very useful for debugging and
monitoring. PCI modems port only to PCs with a PCI bus interface.
