monitor settings question

Running Win 2000 and I use a 15" LCD monitor.

Just downloaded a new version of AdAware. When I open it, I get an error
message telling me my screen resolution is 640 x 480, and AdAware needs it
to be 1024 x 728.

No problem, I thought. I went into Display and resized to 1024 x 728. When
I hit enter, the monitor screen went black, and I couldn't get it back
without turning the pc off.

When AdAware opens, the opening page is all off my monitor except for
perhaps half the page, and I have no way to navigate to the part not
visible.

What is the fix for this problem?

Maybe a video driver configuration problem, is it possible
the refresh rate was too high? That would be my first
guess, if setting to 60Hz refresh doesn't help (did you have
your monitor INF *driver* installed in windows?)

Were you actually running at 640x480 prior to the change? I
don't see why you would do that with win2k.

You didn't tell us about your video card. The necessary
changes should be in display properties (to run 1024x768
mode at about 60Hz (not much higher if any), which is the
typical native resolution for a 15" monitor so I now wonder
why you were running the monitor at a sub-optimal
resolution).

I've just pressed an old pc into service that had Win2K on it.

I didn't do anything about monitor or video card settings. Just plugged the
monitor in (it's considered a plug 'n play device) and it worked nicely. I
only found out about the 640 x 480 resolution it was using when I went to
deal with the 1024 x 738 that AdAware says I need.

The video card seems to be a 3D labs ltd PERMEDIA(MS) display adapter. The
640 x 480 res is running at 60 cycles refresh rate.

I don't know if I can change the res without the screen going black. Not
sure what to do next.

OK, but you need the OS to recognize the limitations of your
display by giving it either the right driver, or to manually
set the 1024x768 to 60Hz... assuming your video card can do
that resolution & refersh rate which most can, unless very
old (cira '97 or earlier, typically).

Determine what your video card is capable of and install a
proper driver if only using the windows bundled driver.
Install the monitor INF driver as that determines what
windows allows.

Your monitor is smaller than usually used, and CANNOT work at higher than
it's Native Resolution.

No DaveW, stop being silly. Plenty of monitors can run at
higher than native resolution, they merely resample to the
native with loss of visual detail, or run in pan-mode where
your mouse scrolls the windows virtual screen size beyond
the monitor physical border. Regardless, 15" LCD monitors
did commonly do 1024x768.
