Default Motherboard/cpu question

If a motherboard died due to a power supply fail or a power surge and
the processor chipset was in the socket of that motherboard at the time
it fried
Does that mean that the cpu is also dead ??

The CPU may have survived. That said, there is the possibility that it
has been stressed and the future life shortened.

My own experience of this was that both went on a system I had running
a few years ago.

The alternative to assuming this is to get a cheap replacement board,

Last year I used e-bay to replace a 5 year old processor on my main
PC. It was from a reclaim Company and cost £8. The original was about
£60.

Unless you can also get an old motherboard you could be throwing away
money (unless your processor is still being used on new boards.)

I needed an exact set up so that I could retain all the software
installed on my Hard Drive.(The Operating System refused to work with
the Hard Drive when I put it in another computer). I was successful in
also getting a used version of my old mobo off ebay for less than £20.
So I was back where I started, with a replacement set up for less than
£30 compared to the original cost of around £130.

Its still going strong tweve months on.

I do a lot of computer repair work and have never seen a bad CPU yet on
a fried mobo.

The cpu of course could be dead, but more than likely it's fine.

The more recent failure was just the motherboard and the CPU survived.
The problem had not been a power surge the board failed but I think it
was a component. I replaced the CPU as this was the cheaper 2nd hand
option and of course by process of elimination then proved the board
was the problem.

I have several boxes of good cpu's taken from failed motherboards.
Hopefully I will eventually come across good P-III and P-IV mobo's so I
can make use of the CPU's

My main machine uses a dual core AMD that was taken from a failed eMachines

Same here. Over the years I have gathered together a collection equal
to the development of the processor since 1992. A mini museum in fact.

Don't know why I bother really. Have all sorts of old computer related
junk filling up a spare bedroom. I no longer fix old PCs I just buy
parts in a certain price range which means about 2 years old. Every
2/3 years start all over again for myself and my wife's PC

due to the gold content
