Default Are MSI and Gigabyte the same?

Because the MSI model RX9550-TD128 Radeon 9550 ATI graphics card looks
exactly like a Gigabyte GV-R955128D, except for the colors and
heatsinks.

they are built around the same chipset so they would look almost the same.

Sometimes the big manufacturers buy their designs from independent labs?

Sometimes big manufacturers sell their products to smaller companies
to re-brand and market as their own so yes there is a very good chance
it was made in the same factory from the same design. Consider that
pretty much all DVD-R drives are made by one of about 5 companies yet
there are probalby 30 or more brands.

They're separate, unrelated companies, with separate product lines.
However, it's not surprising that two companies' video card products
based on the same chip with the same specs look near identical. Both
ATI and nVidia produce what are called "reference board" designs which
are prototypes to give manufacturers an example to go about designing
their own boards for their chips. Most manufacturers just copy that
design nearly verbatim and just change the stenciling for the model
number and manufacturer ID. Occasionally, they'll do something
creative like change the PC board colour or the heatsink design.

Thanks.
