I've had a 3540A and a 3550A go bad within a couple of months of each
other. They were in different machines. I don't burn that many dvds.
I have read about the possible lasers of the 3540A.
Also, any recommendations for another burner. I started with 2 Lite-On's
on but they both only lasted about a month before going bad. I RMA'd both
of them back to newegg. I put my first NEC burner in that same machine and
it lasted about a year. I hate the thought of buying more dvd burners
every year.

It should be better than that. Are you a smoker? That can have a
significant detrimental effect on optical and floppy drives.

TDK or one of the other big-name disk companies makes a cleaning CD that's
worked for me on a couple of devices that were getting cranky. Bought it for
under ten bucks a CVS pharmacy. Might be worth a try.

what do you mean by 'go bad'
do you have excessive dust in your house.
a good clean, by this I mean remove the case and blow it out with dry air
then use a lens cleaner disc to clean the lens.

How about pets? or even living on or near a high traffic gravel or
dirt road or alleyway?
Anyway, your burners were both too young to die. It's also possible
you ave a power supply problem, but it might be hard to prove.

It does not see any type of media. I have tried both dvds and cds.
By taking the bottom off I can see a red light that flashes an a black,
I'm assuming the carrier, plastic block that moves slightly back and forth
while the red light flashes. It was very clean inside-no dust that I could
see.
Anyway I have tried a cd cleaner with no results. I blew into the area of
the light and it didn't seem to matter.
I placed the unit into another machine and tried to boot from it with no
luck.
This unit, 3550A, was in a box with an older 3540A that still works fine
so I can't imagine it's too much dust, although I have no clue. The 3540A
actually gets more use as it's dvd1. I would estimate it's approx 6-8
months older.
Anyway I have pulled the unit. I am going to buy another one from newegg.
Anyone have any recommendations?
Also, after considering using ebay, I threw the last unit away. I don't
want to keep throwing these things away if someone can get it to work so.......
I would be more than happy to send this unit to one of you guys free. The
only catch is that I would like to hear if you get it working and how.
I have had good results with Pionner and LiteOn burners. The pioneers are
more pricey, but I think they are worth it.
